  • MORE THAN MENTONE: Even the teenagers were happy!

"Just had a glorious week at High Horse Lodge. Favorite things: coffee on the screened porch in the morning, naps in the hammock, the low humidity (we forgot it was Alabama in August!), hikes around the property, lying in the backyard at night to watch the meteor shower, stories told by Steve and Harriet, herding goats, swimming in Little River Canyon and the gorgeous drive around the rim. There is so much to do without spending a dime. A few non-free excursions you may want to consider are: Paradise Garden (Folk artist Howard Finster property/museum) in Summerville, GA; a treasure hunt at Unclaimed Baggage in Scottsboro; amazing animals at way-more-than-a-zoo Tigers for Tomorrow near Attalla; the old fashioned drive-in at Henegar; horseback riding with loveable but no-nonsense Nancy Smith at Holly Springs Stables (where our 14-year-old would happily give up her cell phone to live full-time). Search online for directions, times and charges for the above. But for a relaxing vacation in a beautiful, comfortable, well-equipped home with the #1 VRBO hosts anywhere, this is the place. It's CLOSE, but it's not within walking distance to Mentone. But if you're like us, you want to see and do more than just 'downtown' Mentone. In fact, you better book a week so you can have a couple of lazy stay-home days to fish, read in the hammock, and watch the sun set. High Horse Lodge has games, puzzles, books, many kitchen utensils, food staples and condiments, cleaning supplies, towels, blankets, pillows, plus seasonal fresh eggs and garden bounty if you time it right. There's a reason this place is booked solid and all the reviews are 5-star. Book ahead and count the days. Worth every penny and then some. We love High Horse Lodge."

"We loved your cabin. It is very comfortable and relaxing. We found everything we needed. The location to the park is great. Very romantic getaway. My sweetie brought me here for my birthday and I truly loved it. The quiet nights, fireplace, and hot tub. Thank you for opening up your home for us. We also found your cabin to be very clean!"

  • Fantastic

"We chose to spend our CHRISTmas at Dusk Downing. From the moment we walked in the front door we were blown away at the amount of room and beauty of this home. It was perfect for our 4 families. If you needed a room for all to be together it had it ,if you wanted to break up into smaller groups, it had that also. This is the first CHRISTmas in over 40 years we have not been at my moms house (now mine). No regrets IT was a very special time. The view was tremendous but the comfort of the home was something very special to us. A big Thanks to the owners for sharing this treasure with others. As we left to go back home we kept feeling like we were leaving a old friend. I live about 30 miles from this house and travel by it often, the memory will never fade. You could not ask for anything more. Except maybe a big screen TV in the living room."

It’s a quiet location where nature lovers can participate in a range of outdoor activities. If visiting in the winter months, you can hole up in your cabin and simply enjoy the views from your window. Read a book or snuggle up in front of a roaring fireplace with your significant other.
