Overview of Homer Vacation Rentals
Homer Vacation Rentals in Alaska’s Most Southern Town
Homer, the most souther town on Alaska’s highway, is conveniently accessed by Anchorage airport with an internal flight to Homer. By road, it is some 225 miles from Anchorage on the Seward Highway which is also a designated scenic highway. It is also on the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS), a ferry service providing access to communities with no road access. These vessels take people, goods and vehicles to 32 terminals across Washington, British Colombia and Alaska. It serves as part of the National Highway system. Homer lodging puts visitors in the heart of the Alaskan wilderness, on the coast of Kachemak Bay, to the southwest of the Kenai Peninsula.
By Alaskan standards, the weather in the region is mild, meaning it does not get quite as numbingly cold in winter and is warmer than the rest of Alaska in summer. In summer, daylight is as long as 18 hours and during the depths of winter, can be as short as approximately six hours.
Homer Cabins: Where the Neighbors Are the Bears and Moose
Artifacts dating back some 5,000 years have been found around this region so visitors to Homer vacation rentals know that they are staying in an historic area. Visitors come for the incredible scenery, fascinating culture and the vast wilderness. One of the most popular activities is to head out to see the bears. Homer has the reputation of being the "bear viewing capital of the world." It is estimated that some 4,000 of these magnificent animals live here, throughout the 4.7 million acres of the Katmai National Park and Preserve. Those looking to see the bears will head to Brook Falls in July. Conveniently, this is also when the salmon are spawning so it is a great time for anglers to enjoy the fishing. This outdoor wonderland is also an ideal region for kayaking the rivers and bays, taking a cruise or flight to see the glaciers, enjoying whitewater rafting, sailing, skiing, surfing, going hiking or panning for gold. One of the major attractions here is the Aurora Borealis, otherwise known as the Northern Lights.
Known locally as "the fishing hole," The Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon is a fantastic place for fishing, particularly for salmon. During the season from mid-May until the end of June, anglers will enjoy fishing for the King salmon, averaging 15 to 20 pounds each. Another popular activity here is clamming. For those prepared to make the effort, there are plenty of clams to enjoy. The sandy beaches to the north of Homer are the best spot for razor clams. Littlenecks are found around Kachemak Bay, along the bays of Jakalof and China Poot and Sadie Cove.
Wilderness with Wonderful Cuisine
Visitors to Homer cabins will find the region anything but remote when it comes to dining. There are a variety of excellent restaurants, serving wonderful local specialties such as seafood but Homer also has its share of international cuisine restaurants. There are numerous local gifts and souvenirs to consider, with handmade wild berry jams, smoked salmon or salmon jerky, traditional local knives, chocolate and much more.
While here, visitors may also enjoy a visit to the Pratt Museum which is dedicated to preserving the history and culture of the Kackemak Bay. It has interactive exhibitions to capture the art and history of the region, from local inhabitants to the wildlife and architecture. Outdoor exhibits include an ecology trail.
Homer Lodging Is Where You Can Fish for Dinner on Your Doorstep
Homer cabins offer 21st-century luxury in the heart of one of the last real wilderness areas. These stunning homes offer extras such as cable TV, with DVD and films, games systems, and wifi internet access. Some include equipment such as bicycles, and fishing gear. Owners of these properties ensure that guests have everything they may need to enjoy Alaska.
