Traveling to Ketchikan Cabins Is an Adventure
If you plan to travel by air, the most convenient way to get there is on the daily flight service from Seattle. The flight takes approximately 90 minutes. Ketchikan International Airport is located on Gravina Island which is a five-minute ferry ride from downtown. There are shuttle and water taxi services that meet all incoming flights and assist passengers with transporting luggage. Alternate and more adventurous ways of traveling to Ketchikan are by float plane, ferry service, cruise ship or on the Alaska Marine Highway System. The AMHS allows you to take your car and travel between various communities on the inland waterways. In the city of Ketchikan, it is quite easy to get around. There is an efficient public transport system consisting of buses and ferries. There is also a complimentary downtown shuttle bus service that operates between May and October. Many of the locals get around on bicycle and rentals are available at many local stores.
Interesting Attractions and Things to Do near Ketchikan Lodging
The City of Ketchikan was originally formed around the local creek by its original inhabitants the Tingit natives. Today, Creek Street is one of the most impressive wooden boardwalks in the U.S. It is lined with a wide variety of superb restaurants, shops, art galleries, museums and gift shops. You can spend several hours browsing the various stores and museums, and end your day with a delicious meal at one of the restaurants.
If you have an interest in birds and birdwatching then take the time to visit the Deer Mountain Tribal Hatchery and Eagle Center. The center provides insight into Ketchikan’s salmon hatchery industry. It also has a rescue and rehabilitation program for injured raptors and other birds. Most birds are brought to the center when they have been injured and the center takes care of them until they can be released into the wild. The Totem Heritage Center which is located just across the creek has a collection of 19th-century totem poles that were rescued from abandoned native villages. The center has a process of restoring and protecting these national treasures.
The Misty Fjords National Monument features some of Alaska’s most impressive natural scenery. Carved by centuries of glacial activity, the monument can only be reached by float plane or on a boat cruise from Ketchikan which takes between two and three hours. It’s one place that you will want to take loads of photographs. This is also a favorite destination for kayaking excursions. Local outfitters offer day trips or multi-day excursions where you stay in forest cabins along the way.
Ketchikan has always been known for its salmon run and great sport fishing opportunities. There are several species of salmon to be found in the local waters as well as other species such as red snapper and cod. Charter operators offer a range of different tours from family outings to luxury fishing tours.
