Lake Havasu City in Arizona is located along the state's border with California. The arid desert climate in this vacation destination means temperatures during the winter months only drop to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. While summer temperatures can be hot, Lake Havasu is just the place to cool off and enjoy the sunshine.
Lake Havasu City Attractions
There are a plethora of water sports visitors can enjoy during their stay including jetskiing, scuba diving, kayaking, boating, fishing and swimming. The clean and clear water has few to no waves, making it a comfortable swimming spot during much of the year. The beaches surrounding the lake are popular for families who want to have fun in the sun, play in the sand building sandcastles and playing a game of beach volleyball. Beaches at Lake Havasu include London Beach, Rotary Beach and Windsor Beach at Lake Havasu State Park. For indoor swimming, head to the Aquatic Center at the C.V. Wood Community Center for a splash pool and waterslide that's suitable for young children.
Get a little taste of England in Lake Havasu City by visiting the London Bridge. The former London Bridge from across the pond was sold at auction in the 1960s, brought to Lake Havasu and reconstructed in 1971. Pieces of the bridge traveled more than 5,400 miles to get to its new home and today, it is the second-largest attraction in the state only behind the Grand Canyon. Take a 45-minute walking tour of the bridge to see scars from World War II in London while venturing across the Bridgewater Channel. Those heading out on boats will want to make this a spot to anchor as you mingle among the city's other boaters.
Several events are held at Lake Havasu each year including the Havasu Balloon Festival and Fair in January, the Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series in May and a Fourth of July fireworks show. Lake Havasu is also home to the International World Jet Ski Final Races, fishing tournaments, the Western Winter Blast pyrotechnics convention, the Chillin-n-Swillin Beer Festival, and the Havasu Triathlon and Half Marathon.
Outdoor lovers will enjoy the diverse range of hiking trails that will show the surrounding scenery or take you through rocky slopes. You can take a walk around Island Trail, Mohave Sunset Trail or Shoreline Trail, or opt for an easy hike along Chemehuevi Wash Trail or Mockingbird Wash Trail. There are moderate climbs at the Arch Rock Loop Trail, Crack in the Mountain Trail, Pilot Rock Trail, SARA Mountain Park Loop Trail and others. Dedicated adventurers can head to Crossman Peak Trail, Cupcake Mountain Trail, Dead Burro Canyon Trail, Iron Door Mine Trail or Lizard Peek Trail for difficult hikes with long, steep slopes.
Lake Havasu City is the perfect place to go on an off-road adventure, as you can make your way through sand dunes, canyons and the open desert. There are more than 20 off-roading trails within driving distance of the city with varying and challenging terrain. The fall and spring are the best times to visit if you plan to bring your four-wheel-drive dirt bike or ATV to Lake Havasu - you can even explore old mines and abandoned mining towns.
