  • Beautiful river home

"My girlfriends and I just returned from a stay at this home. We had a very relaxing time watching the river flow by and two even caught a trout from the dock. The home is clean, comfortable and very tastefully decorated. The shops at Heber Springs and Batesville were great and it is a beautiful drive to both destinations. The owner was very helpful with any questions that I had. Highly recommend this home."

  • Diamond in the Rough

"Our stay at the Duck's Nest was wonderful! Step inside to a cozy little retreat that is very clean, well maintained and has newer furniture. There is a wonderful full length screened back porch facing the river. We slept in a king sized bed on the porch during a thunderstorm….what an amazing experience! The area also boasts a picnic table for outdoor dining. Although we don't fish, it looks like a perfect spot (comes with it's own dock) to try your luck. I would highly recommend these accommodations and we will definitely be going back. The owner is a very nice woman who goes out of her way to make sure you have all the comforts necessary to enjoy a time away. She also furnishes homemade waffle batter and and absolutely out of this world homemade syrup for your first breakfast. Don't judge this little gem by it's cover or you will surly miss a very pleasurable experience."

  • Warm and Cosy

"It was cool weather so we had the fireplace going every evening, it made us feel so warm and cosy. My grandson would sit in my lap and let me rock him in front of the fire, to me there is nothing like a real fire. The next plus was the master closet that had lots of toys, for my grandson it was like a toy store. This condo is so large the pictures don't portray how much room there is, the open floorplan and kitchen is so large, plenty of room for a sizable family and yet not feel crowded. Bedrooms and bathrooms are spacious as well with tons of storage. Kitchen is well stocked, even found some peanut butter and jelly when my grandson wanted that instead of chicken salad. Thanks for making my visit with old friend and grandson so perfect."

  • great hide away!

"this house is full of charm! We found our host very attentive to our questions. I wish more recycling was more common. Coming from CA, I have grown up with responsible reuse. that is my only suggestion, but I understand every part of the world is different."

Greers Ferry Lake Travel Tips

Greers Ferry Lake Vacation Rentals for a Quiet Holiday

The Ozark Mountains of Arkansas are the state's jewels, where one can experience wildlife, verdant forests, and a variety of fun activities. Greers Ferry Lake is one area in northern Arkansas open for recreation and fun all year long. The height of the season is in summer but even then, you will find little tourism to endanger your fun. Some places in the United States can become overpopulated during summer, reducing the excitement with long lines and high costs. With Greers Ferry Lake vacation rentals, you can have a budget vacation you can plan on your own. A simple click on VRBO will show you the choices you have in vacation rentals around the Greers Ferry Lake region.

Greers Ferry Lake Cabins and the Geography of the Lake

Greers Ferry Lake is one of 12 locations developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the 1960s. The lake sits 60 miles north of Little Rock which is also the airport you would need to fly into for your vacation. Greers Ferry Lake is actually two lakes that are connected by a gorge called the Narrows. The gorge is filled with water, allowing the lakes to combine for 40,500 acres of space. There is over 340 miles of shoreline dotted with Greers Ferry Lake cabins. To get onto the lake, there are several old streets which are now boat ramps, like West Main Street in Herber Springs. Herber Springs is the largest town close to the lakes where you can purchase supplies. The most direct route to the lake from Little Rock is Interstate 107 to 64 to 5 or you can take I-40 up to 65 and over to 92, depending on where your vacation rental is in relation to the lake and towns.

The History of Greers Ferry Lake Homes

Many are unaware of how the area around Greers Ferry Lake homes began. It surprises most to learn the lake was not always as large or pleasant as it is today. Early farmers of the area built a city called Higden on the land that is now covered by the lake. Flooding from the rivers of Arkansas caused the city to be covered time and again which is why they eventually abandoned the city, moving only the cemetery. The area was then allowed to flood as much as it wanted and the U.S. Army Corps decided to form a dam to keep the lake level at a certain amount. Higden’s original town was lost but the settlers rebuilt on higher ground. Residents and visitors have noted that some of the old buildings are still standing under the water creating a watery “ghost town.” Anyone who enjoys a good diving adventure might wish to see just how well these old buildings stand underneath the water.

If you bring children on your trip, they may enjoy an evening out in a tent while the parents remain indoors with comfort at their fingertips. Hiking is possible at two locations: the Mossy Bluff & Buckeye Trail, and Sugar Loaf Mountain Island National Recreation trails. Mossy bluffs provide 1.6 miles of self-guided hiking around Little Red River and Greers Ferry Dam. There are posts along the trail to go with a brochure explanation of those locations. Sugar Loaf area is another of the parks built by the U.S. Army Corps; you can hike 540 feet above sea level to the top of the peak.
