  • Lake Living

"I have been going to Hardy since childhood at a YWCA camp, so it has special meaning to me. This is the first time I have rented a place, as I have friends I usually stay with, and I invited my son and daughter-in-law for the weekend. I arrived the first night with a girlfriend, and we were so impressed with everything. We sat on the deck as the sun went down, watching an amazing sky filled with lightening in the distance (no thunder), which illuminated and reflected off the lake. It couldn't have been a better introduction to the house. The two back bedrooms facing the lake have terrific views, so in the early morning it was equally beautiful seeing mist rising from the water. The location is quiet, and the homes adjacent and across the lake are well-maintained. I have skied Lake Thunderbird, so I am familiar with the layout. This little cove is too shallow for motorboats, but it can handle pontoon, or paddle boats. I used my canoe to paddle over to see friends who live on the lake. The cove is also too shallow for swimming, but I would gather the Summer months would make that a good thing when there is so many boats coming and going. The home is decorated as if it were a private home, and not a typical rental unit. The kitchen was even stocked with a KitchenAid mixer, which really surprised me. The appliances were top-notch. The bedding was cute, the decor was well-done, the bathrooms clean and nicely appointed. The house is clean-as-a-whistle. I had some leftover cake from a party, and actually found a cake plate with a cake dome to cover it; and I also needed scissors for a gift, and found them in a drawer. I noticed bandaids in the medicine cabinet, including large size toiletries. A lot of thought went into stocking this house. My only suggestions would be a hand-rail inside the bathtub (it was hard to get up without one); a full-length mirror; and the driveway swept clear of the Hickory nuts at this time of year. I swept it as I was afraid someone might slip on one, plus, they are very messy as they are driven over. All-in-all, I couldn't have asked for a better place to be in the Hardy area. (Oh, and it was nice to have a dog-friendly home for well-behaved pets. Its obvious the owners love dogs from all their great pictures and decor.) I would most certainly rent this lovely home again should the occasion arise, and will recommend it to friends."

  • Fantastic, well-appointed, nicely furnished, relaxing getaway in the woods

"My wife and teenage kids, along with my parents, and four grad students spent Thanksgiving 2013 at Forest Gate. I've stayed at a number of vacation rental properties in Arkansas and Colorado for a "get away in the woods", and this was one of my favorites. When we first arrived and walked through the house for a quick tour, we were amazed by all the space and the nice furnishings. Having a separate bathroom for each bedroom was great, and balconies off of the upstairs really were a plus for relaxing and enjoying the outdoors. In contrast to many houses where we have stayed, the kitchen(s) were extremely well-stocked with cooking utensils, etc. We loved the large lot, the close proximity to the woods, and the outdoor recreation area with horseshoes, firepit, picnic tables, pond, etc. The things that I enjoyed the most were the great Yamaha baby grand piano, the huge stone fireplace in the living room, and the large master bedroom/bath. I love to get away from everything, and the combination of nice furnishings, remote location, large lot, and generous floor plan really make this place unusual. The housekeepers were also very helpful with suggestions for ATV rentals and for mailing us some items that we accidently left behind. About the only "non-standard" feature worth mentioning is the kitchen situation. There are two kitchens: a smaller one downstairs next to the living area, and a larger one upstairs with the upstairs bedrooms. Having two separate kitchens (instead of a single large one) could be good if you have multiple families or age groups that might naturally cook/eat separately (for example, it worked well for us -- my students tended to use the downstairs kitchen, while my family used the upstairs). It could also be nice to have two ovens, two refrigerators, etc. However, if you have a group that really wants to cook together and all hang out in the kitchen to socialize, you may find that this property does not support that well. In any case, the nice thing is that the downstairs dining area is large enough to accommodate 12-14 people easily, so even if you are cooking separately, you can eat together. We also had a great time on the Wolf Pen Gap ATV trails with vehicles from Black Bear ATV rentals. In summary, I highly recommend Forest Gate if you are looking for a remote location with great furnishings and connection to the outdoors. We would love to return again some time."

  • Happy Camper KC

"We arrived late on a Friday night and had no trouble finding the cabin as we received great directions from the owner. The cabin itself couldn't have been more perfect for our weekend getaway - it had everything you could think of needing. The double decks were great for relaxing and enjoying a great view of the lake. The cabin was so big and fully furnished. The location is less than an hour from Eureka Springs which was great for a day trip. The cabin also has a dock and rock beach you can walk down to - perfect for swimming!"

  • Great place for a weekend stay!

"Exactly as described. Convenient to the Coronado Center, hiking trails, and a bunch of golf courses. Jill & Jim were very pleasant and so were their dogs! We will definitely choose one of their properties the next time we come for a visit to HSV."
