"This was our second visit to what I like to refer to as "Poates Paradise." I'm really somewhat of a homebody. However, after visiting Poates House last year....our family knew that it was the place for us to spend this year's vacation again. It was just as beautiful as I remembered. Peaceful mornings having coffee on the deck while watching squirrels and the many birds that are on the property; all while taking in the breathtaking views of Lake Cortez. Grilling...on an amazing grill I might add...in the late afternoons after all the fishing and swimming was done for the day. And evenings spent with the family gathered at the table, (overlooking the lake of course,) playing various board games that one entire closet is designated to! There is so many more things to do in the area. The kids ventured off to Magic Springs and Crystal Falls in Hot Springs and visited a couple of museums as well. My husband and I enjoyed staying closer to the village. We absolutely loved the local Farmer's Market. There were numerous booths set up....selling everything from plants native to the area....to hand crafted items and produce. I visited a booth of a local artist who sits in a blind and captures the most beautiful images of various wildlife in the area; then has them stretched on canvas or placed in unique frames. Her work is amazing and I bought several pieces as gifts. That's the beauty of staying in the village. You can venture out thirty minutes to Hot Springs where there are so many attractions; or you can stay in the village and enjoy the house on beautiful Lake Cortez and be within minutes of finding great things to do as well. Again this year....I over packed. When you visit "Poates Paradise," you literally need only your clothes and personal items. I cannot imagine how long it took owner's Steve and Tammy, to sit down and make a list so complete of everything to accommodate their guest. The kitchen is fully furnished with everything you need to prepare meals and the bathrooms are ready with body wash and shampoo in case you forgot to bring your own. It was especially nice to meet Steve and Tammy Poates on this trip. They are so friendly and accommodating! We look forward to many more summers spent at this lovely place. Making memories as a family that will last forever!"

"A group of us stayed here for a week and our stay could not have been more enjoyable. I have rented homes across the country through VRBO and this home and the owner are surely at the top of the list. All of the must have's, plus so many nice extras. Comfortable beds, nice open area for gathering, private quarters downstairs and every room seems to have a stunning view!
Cor was not only accommodating, but met us to make sure we had everything we needed and were comfortable with our home away from home.
This home forced us to relax and visit.... Something we take for granted far to often! Several conveniences nearby to include Wal-Mart, convenience stores and several good little resteraunts. Charlie's Pizza is a must for a good cold beer and an even better pizza! The drive to Hot Springs was very easy and took maybe 20 minutes!
I cannot say enough about this home, it felt like our own. Thank you Cornelis for being so kind and giving us a week we will always cherish! (And the fire pit was GREAT on a cold and snowy night!)"

"My wife and I stayed here for 6 nights. Everything was fine and available. Great restful setting, solid satellite viewing on multiple TVs as well. Very quiet neighborhood. The view of the lake and the dock is very peaceful. Bit of a walk down to it, but well worth it! Take a book and a thermos of coffee. Funniest thing was the hickory nuts falling on the deck. Until you figure out what it was it is a bit out of the norm. The biggest problem is that Mapquest will direct you to a gate requiring a pass code. Stick with Rte 5 coming into Desoto Drive and you will be fine. Huge number of golf courses that look lightly used. Should have no problem with tee times. Hot Springs National Park and the Tower should be seen. Boat rentals available for the lake as well. Best to buy groceries in Hot Springs. I recommend the WalMart on south Central....it is HUGE! A smaller grocery store outside the Rte 5 gate called Cranfield or something similar. Anything you need the owner Linda Rinaldo can help with information wise. Bring a college sticker and add it to the window or as a coaster.....quite a representation."
