Overview of Thousand Palms Vacation Rentals

Vacation at a Desert Paradise in a Thousand Palms Vacation Rentals

The City of Thousand Palms is near an oasis where the San Andreas Fault forces deep groundwater to the surface. Palm trees grow naturally along the fault because the natural conditions create an underground dam where water reaches the surface, sustaining the Fan Palms and unique wildlife. And, indeed, a leisurely walk through these native Palm forests can be most satisfying as it can be 10-20 degrees cooler. Excellent Thousand Palms lodging can get you close to the oasis and make your California desert vacation most rewarding.

The Thousand Palms Oasis and Its Unique History

Because the fault forces underground spring waters up to the surface, it was a place of refuse for indigenous peoples for at least a thousand years. In 1900, the Oasis was originally homesteaded by Albert Thornburg, but later, in 1905, was traded to Paul Wilhelm for a couple of mules and a wagon. Wilhelm's dream was that the oasis would someday be a park for all to enjoy. It took a while, but in 1984, Wilhelm's dream came true. The Visitor Center, built from palm trunks, is actually the original homestead. The Coachella Valley Preserve now encompasses the Thousand Palms Oasis and is a 20,000 acre sanctuary for the endangered Coachella Valley Fringe-Toed Lizard.
