The Ribbon Falls is the tallest single waterfall in the United States. Other waterfalls include the beautiful Bridalveil Falls, so named because the wind often blows the waterfall, spreading out the water like a bridal veil. The Horsetail Falls is a seasonal waterfall than runs for several weeks in February off the eastern side of El Capitan. The background light from the sun lights up the waterfall in a spectacular way, making it look as though it’s on fire.

Yosemite’s rock formations provide excellent subjects for photographs, especially in the early morning or late afternoon sunlight. Some of the more famous landmarks include El Capitan which is a 7,569-foot granite peak that rises up from the valley floor. It is a challenging and well-known rock climbing face. Mt. Lyell is the tallest peak in the park and also home to the park’s only active glacier. The peak rises up to an impressive height of 13,114 feet. The Matterhorn peak is at an altitude of 12,264 feet and part of a series of peaks that make up the Sawtooth Ridge in the northeastern part of the park.
