"what a getaway!
we came here for our 3rd stay, a relaxing weekend before the busy holidays in Dec, and love it even more
the drive up from SF was scenic and breathtaking, with hwy 1 hugging the coast and waves crashing, and sheep/cows roaming the green sonoma hills. but the approach to the town of gualala, past the river dumping into the pacific, is my favorite
the owners, rick and teresa, were so friendly and attentive. upon making our reservation, they checked in with my wife and i and passed on their updated recommendations about the gallerys, restaurants, and cute well-stocked market in town. in fact, as it was the christmas season, they told us about the performing arts center's holiday concert. this was fantastic! open to the public, a beautiful building and grounds, singing, bell choir; our 2 young kids loved the appearance by santa and homemade cookies!
but then we arrived at serendipity. WOW!!
craftsman style with shingles on the outside, exposed wood, and bedrooms at either end on the inside. amazing beds. the pictures of the views don't do it justice. the central windows are huge, complete with a relaxing ~3x30 foot window seat/bench, and are the center piece of the great room. this open kitchen/dining/living room nicely focuses on the waves crashing on the sandbar from the gualala river. we started and ended our days on this bench. as other reviewers noted, the kitchen was fully stocked, but our little ones were most excited about discovering toys, games, animals, projects, and tons of movies in the drawers under the window seat. well that, and the hot tub on the back porch. who doesn't like a hot tub in the afternoon on a winter day??
it did rain on/off for the 3 days, but this only added to the charm and reinforced our desire to stay at the house. we just didn't want to miss any of the waves! we were completely entertained at the house: relaxing, napping, reading books and coloring/making our christmas cards. we arrived to deer in the backyard, saw tons of otters and seals in the brackish river water, and even made some home-made ornaments for ourselves as souvenirs. my wife even had a nice solo-adventure exploring a couple galleries and the crafty shops full of tons of fun house/art stuff just down the road
we had so much fun that none of us wanted to leave...writing this review makes me miss it more.
Its such a great family/entertaining house, and we can't wait to come back!!
thank you rick and teresa"
