  • 3rd times a charm

"what a getaway! we came here for our 3rd stay, a relaxing weekend before the busy holidays in Dec, and love it even more the drive up from SF was scenic and breathtaking, with hwy 1 hugging the coast and waves crashing, and sheep/cows roaming the green sonoma hills. but the approach to the town of gualala, past the river dumping into the pacific, is my favorite the owners, rick and teresa, were so friendly and attentive. upon making our reservation, they checked in with my wife and i and passed on their updated recommendations about the gallerys, restaurants, and cute well-stocked market in town. in fact, as it was the christmas season, they told us about the performing arts center's holiday concert. this was fantastic! open to the public, a beautiful building and grounds, singing, bell choir; our 2 young kids loved the appearance by santa and homemade cookies! but then we arrived at serendipity. WOW!! craftsman style with shingles on the outside, exposed wood, and bedrooms at either end on the inside. amazing beds. the pictures of the views don't do it justice. the central windows are huge, complete with a relaxing ~3x30 foot window seat/bench, and are the center piece of the great room. this open kitchen/dining/living room nicely focuses on the waves crashing on the sandbar from the gualala river. we started and ended our days on this bench. as other reviewers noted, the kitchen was fully stocked, but our little ones were most excited about discovering toys, games, animals, projects, and tons of movies in the drawers under the window seat. well that, and the hot tub on the back porch. who doesn't like a hot tub in the afternoon on a winter day?? it did rain on/off for the 3 days, but this only added to the charm and reinforced our desire to stay at the house. we just didn't want to miss any of the waves! we were completely entertained at the house: relaxing, napping, reading books and coloring/making our christmas cards. we arrived to deer in the backyard, saw tons of otters and seals in the brackish river water, and even made some home-made ornaments for ourselves as souvenirs. my wife even had a nice solo-adventure exploring a couple galleries and the crafty shops full of tons of fun house/art stuff just down the road we had so much fun that none of us wanted to leave...writing this review makes me miss it more. Its such a great family/entertaining house, and we can't wait to come back!! thank you rick and teresa"

  • Unparalleled Beauty and Magnificent Home

"Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful home with us. Based upon the photos and descriptions we were expecting something really special, but when my wife and I arrived the first day, we both agreed that Phoenix Nest exceeded our expectations! What a restful, special, and beautifully appointed vacation spot and home. We particularly enjoyed the colony of sea lions and watching the whales. My wife enjoyed soaking in the hot tub while taking in the big vistas. We appreciated so much the opportunity to spend time on the Haven's Neck preserve. Thank you for making this exquisite place available to us. We spend a lot of time in the outdoors, but what a treat to see and hear sea lions and look at the flora and fauna! My wife enjoyed re-reading Island of the Blue Dolphins during our stay. Your home has an understated elegance that we both appreciated. It is very comfortable and inviting, bright and airy, with beautiful views in every direction. We felt right at home during our week at Phoenix Nest. We hope to visit again."

"Great home! Beautifully appointed rooms, comfortable but very elegant. Views from every room (the pictures are TRUE!) The owners are very easy to deal with, and have well maintained the property. Everything worked as promised, including the hot tub on the deck, jetted tub in master bath, laundry facilities, and kitchen appliances. We have already recommended to friends, and will check availibility first when returning to the area."

  • What an incredible little cottage!

"I came to this little cottage on the coast for what I hoped would be a relaxing weekend, and I don't think I could have found a better spot! I'm already looking at my calendar to figure out when I can come back and bring my boyfriend because it would be perfect for a couple. Actually, I'd love to bring everyone I love to this place so they can experience the happiness I did while I stayed there. Having a solo weekend getaway was what I needed, and this place exceeded my expectations in a big way! I was comfortable and although I was alone this place didn't make me feel lonely. It's spacious, yet cozy, and it's pretty well equipped with most of what you'd need. The hot tub was divine, especially at night under the stars...or early morning you can watch the sunrise while relaxing in the hot tub. It was magical. There were a few minor things that I noticed and wanted to mention. The sheets and bedding had been washed in very heavy scented detergent, and it was a bit overwhelming. I'm sensitive to fragrance and have to admit it was hard to fall asleep because of the strong scent of the pillows and sheets. I'd suggest using detergent that is fragrance free for guests that have a sensitivity to that sort of thing. The other thing was the shower had a curtain only, but no inner plastic lining. So as I was showering I had to keep the actual curtain inside the shower because otherwise water was getting all over the floor...but in keeping the curtain inside the shower it was constantly sticking to me as I tried to shower. I'd recommend a simple, plastic shower liner so there's no water mess, the cute fish shower curtain doesn't get mold damage or ruined, and so guests can shower a little easier. These are merely suggestions, and not complaints. I had such a great time that these minor details weren't a biggie but I felt I should mention them anyway. All in all, I had a wonderful stay at Tom and Susan's ocean front cottage home. I want to thank them both for sharing this truly special place with me. Tom was very nice and I'm glad I was able to meet him right before I left. Unfortunately I was not able to meet Susan but hope to next time I stay. I met many locals and explored the surrounding area during me two night stay. The weather was absolutely fact, it was even hot and it's October! I couldn't have asked for a better getaway and it was one of the best weekends of my life, and one I will never forget!"
