"As it states in the video, this is a dream cottage and this tidy little house is aptly named. Our weekend here was a dream.
The video of the house on this website is no optical illusion. Upon arrival, when we saw our first view of Buckhorn Cove, we knew we had made the right decision. The house is perched on a bluff overlooking the cove. The views from the porch, the living room and the bedroom are incredible. We spent hours gazing out to the horizon and watching the light as it changed over the ocean. Additional hours were spent peering into the cove, watching its appearance transformed as the tides came in and went out. (The proprietors thoughtfully provided a tide chart for our stay, which included a minus tide.)
It’s a few short minutes to walk to the semi-private beach, where the views are even more impressive, with rock arches that can’t be seen from the house or the highway. At low tide, the tide pools reveal a world unto themselves. One morning we watched a heron foraging in the tide pools, and an old woman toting bags of mussels. The house itself is clean, comfortable, and well-equipped. Everything you need is there, and it all works.
We had a fleeting thought one evening to watch a movie on the TV, but it almost seemed sacrilegious. Instead we watched the dusk descend, and spotted blue whale blows miles off the coast. With binoculars and the naked eye, we watched a group of four whales blowing water into the air at regular intervals. We watched the sun dip below the horizon in a flurry of gold and rust. A short time later, we looked up to see a crescent moon just above the horizon, flanked by a pair of planets that appeared to be hanging on a string. Again, we sat and watched it disappear into the Pacific. It was a natural display that provided us with more wonder and entertainment than any electronic screen ever could have.
There are handy guides to local restaurants and hiking spots (try the Spring Ranch. Great bluffs, rocks and wildlife). We spent a few hours hiking and walking in Mendocino, but we felt content just staying home at the cove.
If you’re looking for a dream weekend, this house is for you. Weather is always changing on the coast, so bring warm clothes — and we suggest you also bring a sense of wonder."
