"My boyfriend, my dog, and I stayed at Susan and Jim's lovely cottage for 6 weeks while I was completing an internship in San Ramon. The house was exactly what we needed for the time we were there. There is a small kitchen/living room, downstairs bathroom, and a lofted bedroom. The bedroom was adorable, but the ceiling is low, so watch your head! We had fruit and water bottles waiting for us when we checked in, which was a really nice gesture.
My dog, Atlas, is a 95 lb German shepherd. Susan and Jim were very accommodating and wonderful to him. Susan even took Atlas for walks at night and bought him dog toys! She really is the nicest person ever. One night, we asked if we could borrow an HDMI cable, and Susan went out and bought one, even though she really didn't have to.
The neighborhood is beautiful and a pleasure to walk around. I felt really safe at night. Right outside the house is a breath-taking view of the entire SF Bay. On a clear day, you can see the Gold Gate Bridge! Susan took us to all of the best trails around the neighborhood, which were a great place to take our dog off leash. There are beautiful valleys, lakes, red wood trees and eucalyptus trees all over the hikes. It felt like we were back in Colorado, and we were only in walking distance from the cottage. All of the houses in the neighborhood are unique with amazing landscaping.
You are about a 25 min walk (or 5 minute bike ride/ UBER ride) to the best two locations: west of the house is Salano Street, which has all the great restaurants, bars and shopping, and south of the house is the UC-Berkeley campus /down town. I would not stay right in the heart of down town or near campus, because it can be dangerous at night, and it's truly not as beautiful as Jim and Susan's neighborhood.
Staying at the tree house cottage was truly amazing and I highly recommend it over a hotel. You can't go wrong with Susan and Jim-- they are kind and generous hosts, with an amazing cottage!"
