  • Can't beat the view!

"I would give this house a 5 star rating except that it is a bit outdated, especially the kitchen. Cabinets need painting and they don't open and shut well. That said the house was very clean and contained most of our needs. We loved the bedroom, it was very romantic, as it opened up to the beautiful front gardens and to the hot tub. The front part of the house (living room, sunroom and kitchen), and, of course, the deck have a marvelous view. We loved sitting outside on the deck at sunset. We did have a little problem with launching our kayaks from this house. We had to lift them over the deck fence to get them to the ramp and launch them. As it turned out, we would have been better off to use the launch down the street and kayak to the house. The launch is within walking distance. The other problem with the kayaks was that we had to keep them on the ramp at night because had we just tied them up, and left them in the water they would have slammed against the pilings that the house is on. There's not enough beach to tie the kayaks onto a beach. This, of course, is no reflection on the house. I'm just mentioning it to prepare any other people who might want to bring their own kayaks. It's expensive, but it might be easier to just rent kayak down at Blue Water kayaking which is very close to the house. We did enjoy our stay very much."

  • Perfect house for the holidays

"I was concerned about a few details before renting this house, especially the location right on Highway 1 and the shared driveway. I'm very happy to report that we never knew we were on Highway 1 while we were there because the house is downhill from the roadway, and the privacy was not hindered by the shared drive (we never saw a car on it) or the adjacent highway. All you see from the very appealing living/dining area is Tomales Bay. Several sets of binoculars are provided in the living room and came in handy for bird watching. Down below, the equally appealing family room offers a closer view and we saw California quail on the small lawn as well as sea otters, seals, innumerable birds and stingrays from the dock. The interior is great (much more pleasing than the outside of the house suggests) and I've never rented a house with such a well-stocked kitchen before. Tons of firewood, charming fireplace, fabulous beds & bedding. Also a good piano. Nice baths and good laundry facilities. There is a very narrow and steep spiral staircase in the kitchen that takes you down to the 3 bedrooms and family room and we actually preferred to take the outside stairs. That staircase is the only thing we found problematic, but given the location and amenities, it's worth putting up with. Definitely not for toddlers or the weak-kneed. It would be helpful to have a dog/child gate at the top of this stair--we used our cooler so our old dog wouldn't tumble down. It was plenty big for a family of 4 and we could have comfortably had another 2 or 3 guests there. The rental agency is great to work with and they returned our security deposit pronto, which is not something that happens as much as I think it should anymore. I'd love to stay again and kayak to Nick's Cove in the summer. But we hiked all over, including up Clark's Road just down Highway 1, which is good in wet weather and provides a wonderful view from the ocean to Napa at the top. Many wild turkeys, bluebirds and other creatures on the hike. Can't wait to go back in warmer weather and take advantage of the dock."

  • Good - not great this time

"Second time for staying at the very cute Elephant Studio. Last year at this time was our first stay and what a perfect time we had. . . the place is tiny and delicious. Best part - the awesome secluded and protected sunny deck. The studio itself is small - that's OK - one should expect that. We didn't mind the coziness at all. But shouldn't an equipped kitchen at least have at least a couple of drinking glass or wine glasses? Two plastic champagne flutes doesn't really cut it. . . drinking wine from a coffee mug is OK but not great. . . and maybe a toaster oven or plain ol' toaster? And the relentless deep barking of a sweet looking HUGE dog next door detracted from the oh-so-perfectness of the deck. Either the next door owners were not home or hard of hearing because the dogs (2?)- either inside or on the deck - barked a lot! (but not at night, thankfully). The Murphy bed is OK but squeaky due to the odd piece of plywood at the head of the bed - we found that a towel placed between the wall and the piece of wood helped a lot. We most likely will go back again because we love the deck, the view, the setting - practically on TOP of the water and did I mention that deck? so private and protected - even on a very windy day we enjoyed sitting out there grilling some oysters because we were warm and cozy. (if only the dogs would be quiet. . . )"
