"This was our first stay here, and even though it was only for two nights, that was enough for us to fall in love with the place. Now we think this would be perfect place for us to get away for a week to relax and unwind in serene beauty. While the photos are spot-on accurate, they still can’t convey the charm of the cabin and its surroundings. Honestly, I wasn't sure what we would find when we got there, but our anticipation started growing even as we drove the last winding turns to the cabin and parked. Then we opened the door, breathed in the fresh woodsy smell of the place, and found ourselves transported back in time. It was clear this place was special place (and I was a hero for finding the place :-).
The cabin strikes a lovely balance between modern comforts and historic charm. We only stayed upstairs, which had everything we needed. Wonderful windows are everywhere! And the glass seems to be the original 1909 glass, old and wavy. Beautiful!
Both bedrooms upstairs are nice and comfortable, and each has its own bathroom. The baths are 1909 small, but I like that Don has kept them that way. Each bath has its own shower, but because this is a remote community with septic systems, you can only take functional showers. We didn't mind; we did our part to be good house guests. We used just one bedroom, but both bathrooms! :-)
We found the place super clean and supplied with firewood, lighting sticks, and matches. The old stove worked great. The house also has central heat, but we enjoyed using the old stove.
The wrap-around balconies provide a great view. I wish we used them more, but we were out and about too much. Maybe next time.
This is no multi-million dollar Aspen mountain home. I've stayed at—and enjoyed my stays at—nice places like those, but Don’s cabin is something special and more unique, and has found a special place in our hearts. If you’re looking for a beautifully kept and preserved 1909 cabin nestled in a tiny, quiet mountain community, surrounded by tall evergreens, bay trees, running streams, waterfalls, and quiet trails through the woods (and yet not far from Santa Cruz and Capitola attractions and fine dining), this might be your place. This is a gem of a place, and Don is a great and welcoming owner."
