  • Exceptional Home on 22 acres in the Forest

"This is an exceptional vacation rental for families, and for couples sharing expenses. There are 22 acres of meadows and forest to wander, and decks where you can sit and enjoy the quiet beauty and bounty that surrounds you. The house is extremely well-equipped and well-managed, with (more than!) everything needed for a great vacation. There's something rewarding for everyone in a group to do: visit Lassen National Park with its thermal features and vistas, fish or boat in a wide choice of lakes and streams, hike forests with hundreds of miles of trails, and more. If you're looking for peace and quiet, adventure, sightseeing, or water sports, this can't be beat."

  • Just spent a week here, and it was well beyond our expectations!

"Reviews are important to me when searching for a rental, so here's my input for future renters of Battle Creek Retreat. Upstairs has a full bath, two bedrooms with queen beds, and a large master suite with a king bed and patio. You can hear the creek from the master bedroom, and the bed was super comfortable. We were very excited to see plenty of closet space and drawers available, so we quickly unpacked for the week. When done, we still had room to stash our empty suitcases! Downstairs has two living rooms/lounging areas, full bath, kitchen, laundry area, and a sunroom/playroom. The main living room has two cozy reclining sofas, and there were plenty of throw blankets to use. The fireplace was set up for us with paper and kindling - it took one match and a couple minutes to create a raging fire! The dining area has a large table and a Keurig coffee cart with many options. Beyond the dining area is a sliding glass door leading to the sunroom/playroom with a table for 4 and a sofa. There were books, crayons, puzzles, cards, dominoes, dice, and board games. The board games were kind of dated, but it was fine since we always bring our few favorite games with us. The kitchen was fully stocked with pots, pans, utensils, and sharp knives. It had all the items a home chef would need; just bring your own food, spices, and condiments. Outside there is a fire pit (a real one! - not one of those cheap ones from Home Depot) with a large picnic table and patio furniture around it along with a gazebo with a bistro set. There is a detached bunkhouse with bunk beds. I'd imagine most kids would enjoy having their own place away from their parents while on vacation. A very short walk down behind the house is a relaxing patio with chairs over the creek. There is a path by the creek that leads out to the street, and a quick walk from there (I'd guess a little over half a mile) is a lake with a picnic area. Very cool! Oh, and there was a bottle of local wine waiting for us...very nice! If you can convince yourself to leave the house, there are so many places go. Our main reason to visit was, of course, Lassen. The drive through the park was beautiful, and Bumpass Hell was awesome! Burney Falls was great, and pictures do not do it justice. Also worth visiting: Subway Cave, Shasta Dam, and Turtle Bay/Sundial Bridge in Redding. I would highly recommend this place, and we hope to return when ready for a 6-hour drive again."

  • First time Lassen visitors

"This was a hiking visit to Lassen for 2 adult couples. We all thoroughly enjoyed staying at this property. It was perfect for us. We (couple #1) had the downstairs king bedroom with a private bath. The bed was wonderful. Couple #2 stayed upstairs in the other king bedroom, but had to come downstairs to use bathroom #2. We both had to pass through another bedroom to reach ours, which was fine with only 2 couples. The kitchen was updated (except for a broken ice maker) and provided all we needed to cook all of our meals, although I'm not used to an electric stove. We brought our food with us, as we weren't sure about a well stocked store nearby. We did not eat out. The nicest part of the house was the wonderful deck overlooking the beautiful, peaceful, good sized spring fed creek! We were out there for morning coffee and evening cocktails, plus using the gas grill. The house is only a 15 minute drive from the park entrance which was very convenient. Michael was a great host, although he provides no written information or instructions, which would have been nice. We enjoyed hiking in Lassen, even with a Black bear encounter! Bumpass Hell was interesting, but crowded. We preferred the more isolated trails to lakes and view points. Don't bother with the Manzanita Creek trail - but enjoy the walk around Manzanita Lake!"

  • Storybook Cottage

"This was a wonderful place to stay - so comfortable, well-equipped, and beautiful, inside and out. We loved sitting on the deck and enjoying the soothing sound of the stream nearby. The owners were easy to deal with, and we felt very welcome."
