  • Immaculately clean; Exceptional host/hostess

"This property is so immaculately clean that the entire inside looks new. The kitchen was fully stocked and even included a tea maker. There was a bottle of wine, crackers and cheeses waiting for us. We were late arriving and hadn't stopped to pick up food for dinner, so I called and asked Felicia where we could stop to get either a prepared meal or food to prepare our own. She said nothing was open late within 30 miles, but she generously offered us burgers and hot dogs from her own freezer!! When we arrived, not only were the meats there, but she had supplied condiments even including tomato, onions and pickles! THEN, as if that weren't above and beyond, she had left side dishes for us as well! The deck is huge and includes 2 picnic tables, so we grilled our dinner and sat outside just enjoying the quiet and beauty. Al and Felicia had also left us a small turkey and cheese tray, which we packed and took with us for a picnic lunch at Lassen Volcanic Park (only about 10 minutes away). Bring your food with you because there are no grocery stores here (only small camp-type stores). It is a beautiful area, better because there is little commercialism. Also nearby, about 2 miles, are lava tubes that can be independently explored by flashlight like a cave. Al and Felicia recommended JJ Café, only about a mile away, for breakfast. Breakfast was delicious--homemade fried potatoes, bakery or homemade bread for toast. There is no internet, but our hosts left a supply of DVDs for evening entertainment. The showers were great--each of us showered every morning one right after the other and did not run out of hot water. The beds are very firm. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. My adult son and daughter spoke of Felicia as "like having a grandmother who pampers us.""

  • BEST PLACE IN Lassen Area

"The best vacation house we ever had, the house was spacy, well equipped, and good location, with very nice creek in front. Highly recommended"

  • Storybook Cottage

"This was a wonderful place to stay - so comfortable, well-equipped, and beautiful, inside and out. We loved sitting on the deck and enjoying the soothing sound of the stream nearby. The owners were easy to deal with, and we felt very welcome."

  • Just spent a week here, and it was well beyond our expectations!

"Reviews are important to me when searching for a rental, so here's my input for future renters of Battle Creek Retreat. Upstairs has a full bath, two bedrooms with queen beds, and a large master suite with a king bed and patio. You can hear the creek from the master bedroom, and the bed was super comfortable. We were very excited to see plenty of closet space and drawers available, so we quickly unpacked for the week. When done, we still had room to stash our empty suitcases! Downstairs has two living rooms/lounging areas, full bath, kitchen, laundry area, and a sunroom/playroom. The main living room has two cozy reclining sofas, and there were plenty of throw blankets to use. The fireplace was set up for us with paper and kindling - it took one match and a couple minutes to create a raging fire! The dining area has a large table and a Keurig coffee cart with many options. Beyond the dining area is a sliding glass door leading to the sunroom/playroom with a table for 4 and a sofa. There were books, crayons, puzzles, cards, dominoes, dice, and board games. The board games were kind of dated, but it was fine since we always bring our few favorite games with us. The kitchen was fully stocked with pots, pans, utensils, and sharp knives. It had all the items a home chef would need; just bring your own food, spices, and condiments. Outside there is a fire pit (a real one! - not one of those cheap ones from Home Depot) with a large picnic table and patio furniture around it along with a gazebo with a bistro set. There is a detached bunkhouse with bunk beds. I'd imagine most kids would enjoy having their own place away from their parents while on vacation. A very short walk down behind the house is a relaxing patio with chairs over the creek. There is a path by the creek that leads out to the street, and a quick walk from there (I'd guess a little over half a mile) is a lake with a picnic area. Very cool! Oh, and there was a bottle of local wine waiting for us...very nice! If you can convince yourself to leave the house, there are so many places go. Our main reason to visit was, of course, Lassen. The drive through the park was beautiful, and Bumpass Hell was awesome! Burney Falls was great, and pictures do not do it justice. Also worth visiting: Subway Cave, Shasta Dam, and Turtle Bay/Sundial Bridge in Redding. I would highly recommend this place, and we hope to return when ready for a 6-hour drive again."
