  • Great Family Vacation Spot

"This is a great cabin for a family vacation - very relaxing and low key. It is conveniently located across from the Rec center which hosts a bunch of different activities for kids and families: movie night, swim, pickle ball, and tennis lessons. Unfortunately, this year the water levels were not great for swimming. The property managers are wonderful and VERY helpful and responsive. Clean and comfy, but bare bones amenities so be prepared for a low tech experience:no dishwasher, only one bathroom on the ground floor (not easy for little ones during the night), WiFi intermittent, no telephone (cell service sketchy), and TV not positioned in a place for easy group viewing of movies. Although possible to do day trips/hikes to Lassen National Park, it is a good 1 hour away from the entrance of the park -- so its a long day of driving."

  • Private and Perfect

"This was our second trip to Northern California after passing through last summer on our way to Disneyland. We were enthralled by the gorgeous rolling hills and that fantastic sunshine. We decided to return for a few days at spring break, this time with the whole family - dog also. This property was the perfect location, about 7 minutes to I-5. You barely notice adjacent properties, and the view is all land management reserve. Every sunrise was remarkable, and the wildlife plentiful! The house is super well equipped and maintained, and was a perfect layout for our teen boys. The weather was fantastic in mid-March, although the pool remained too cool to swim. Still, we enjoyed being poolside in the sunshine. The owners were very responsive and easy to work with. It's our first VRBO, and I can't say enough about how well it all went. Hope to return ... thanks"

  • The Greatest Place!

"I frequently travel and require short term housing. This rental without a doubt one of the best I have found to date. Although within the city, the location is private and the surroundings beautiful and quiet. The apartment itself was comfortable, immaculate and tastefully furnished. The owner/property manager is available for any questions and respectful of the tenants privacy. I highly recommend this for anyone."

Shasta Cascade Travel Tips

The Shasta Cascades with Northern California Vacation Rentals

California is a state with diverse terrain. While the desert dominates Southern California, the mountain peaks and deep azure lakes of Northern California beckon to the outdoor enthusiasts. Lake Tahoe resides on the border between California and Nevada. It is usually an ideal destination for vacationers yet there is some place that offers even more. The Shasta Cascades of Northern California is considered a secret rendezvous for vacationers. Its pristine lakes, winter wonderland mountains, and Northern California cabins make for the perfect getaway. These cabins offer you kitchens, privacy, and adventure. With VRBO, you can choose from numerous Northern California vacation rentals to spend your trip enjoying the fruits California has to offer. Whether you want backcountry drives or a journey on world-class rivers, you have it all in the Shasta Cascades.

Driving to the Shasta Region

The Cascades are located in the northeastern or north-central region of California. There are sections of the mountain range which will border Oregon and Nevada, as well as the Central Valley. The main focus is that of Mount Shasta lying near the Trinity Alps. Interstate 5 is the most direct route to your luxury Northern California cabins if you are entering from the north or south. If you are originating from Nevada, there is Interstate 80 that takes you to Interstate 5, or highways 299 or 395 that will bring you into Mount Shasta lodging and the Cascades.

Historical Notes About Northern California

Travel in the earlier centuries was not as easy as our highways are today which is perhaps why Northern California in the early 19th century was little known. The Shasta Cascades had very few people traveling along the Siskiyou Trail from Oregon or from the San Francisco Bay area to reach the mountains. The first non-Native Americans to travel through the mountain peaks were the British and American fur trappers. The Spanish are said to have visited sometime around 1820. This early history was what eventually sparked the 1851 discovery of gold. Prospectors from the Gold Rush moved up the rivers searching for gold, creating settlements like Old Shasta, Portuguese Flat, Upper Soda Springs, and Weaverville.

Shasta State Historic Park is one place you may want to visit from your Northern California lodging. It makes for a wonderful day trip where you can backpack through the mountains, picnic around rivers, and learn about the mining town. The town once had 2,500 residents including miners and gamblers. If you do visit the historical park, you will need to step into the Old Courthouse which contains a number of relics from the Gold Rush. It also has 100 years of California Art depicting the region.

The Shasta Cascades offer Weaverville Joss House State Historic Park, Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, and Lassen Volcanic National Park. These three locations provide an abundance of history about the region and its people which is worth learning.

Lassen Peak and its Geological Significance

Northern California, especially the Trinity Alps and Cascade Range, is more about the outdoor adventures one can have than shopping and restaurants. The Northern California vacation rentals make it easy to make all your meals at home. With day hikes, you can picnic in a new area every day, watching the birds and wildlife. You can also enjoy lunch at your Northern California cabins and then participate in a range of activities, such as shorter hikes, whitewater rafting, and winter skiing. Lassen Peak lodging is perhaps one place you might like to view, whether it is from your cabin or along the trails that take you towards the top.

Lassen Peak or Mount Lassen is the southernmost active volcano. It is part of the Volcanic Arc that stretches from British Columbia. Lassen is 2,000 feet above sea level with a volume of a half-cubic mile. This makes it one of the grandest lava domes on planet Earth. Lassen is still active, and its last eruption occurred on May 22, 1915, devastating the area around it.

Dining in Mount Shasta and Weaverville

Often on vacation we do not feel like cooking our meals, even though our budget might demand it. If there are times you might like to dine out while in Northern California, you have the Best Western Tree House Motor Inn, Jack’s Grill, and C.R. Gibbs American Grille.
