  • Idyllic

"i·dyl·lic: extremely happy, peaceful, or picturesque. That's such a perfect word to describe our time in the Henkle House. Here's why: Location - the best thing about this place is the proximity to the beach. You are about 100 steps to the gate that gets you onto the private beach. The owner left us plenty of wrist bands that private beach goers must use. Ocean Beach Park is 25 ft to the right of the private beach so there is super easy access. Renovated house - the house has been recently renovated and belongs in the pages of a catalog. the owner went first class all the way - frontgate outdoor furniture, outdoor kitchen, pottery barn bedding, pier 1 accessories. I've never been in a rental that has been so carefully and beautifully decorated. So relaxing! Great for kids - Ocean Beach Park kept the kids easily entertained, cloudy or sunny. mini-golf, splash park, amusement rides, beach, playground, digging for crabs. At the end of each day, we stuck all five kids (mostly toddlers) upstairs to sleep on the 3rd floor. There was a TV in there so they could watch a movie at the end of the day and fall asleep. I honestly don't know why this area isn't jammed all summer long but I am grateful that it hasn't yet been discovered. This house was a perfect place for us - launching pad for Ocean Beach Park activities and relaxing for the granddad who preferred to read on the beautiful outdoor deck. We hope to come back for years to come."

  • Great Location!

"The location provided the opportunity to walk to the (free) Town Beach, many restaurants (Michael's Dairy for ice cream was fabulous), Dunkin Donuts, and the Eugene O'Neil house. We were close by car to Ocean Beach, Mystic Seaport, and many historic sites in New London. The owners very thoughtfully provided a free pass to Ocean Beach. The house itself suited our needs perfectly. The backyard accommodated 20 people for an informal luncheon and the front porch was ideal for quiet conversation. The eat in kitchen was a gathering spot every morning. We enjoyed the feeling of moving into "grandmother's house" with a good variety of books, games, and toys around for all ages. We were however, disappointed with a variety of housekeeping issues. The place had obviously not had a good thorough cleaning in quite a while. Cleaning supplies were not well organized, making it difficult for us to clean during our stay and at check out. It took a day of searching to find the cables for the DVD player. While we appreciate having basic condiments and supplies left from previous tenants (we ourselves left dish liquid for the next tenants), so much had been left in the cabinets and refrigerator it was difficult to find space for the food we had brought. Most of our food had to be left on the counter as there was no cabinet space available. Overall, the dust and cobwebs as well as other obvious issues, made it clear that the house had not been thoroughly cleaned before our arrival. In conclusion - we loved the location and ambiance of the house and would probably stay here again. We give it Five Stars for location and 3 1/2 Stars for Housekeeping."

  • UNFORGETTABLE!!!

"I can't say enough good things about the Riverview Cottage. My family rented last weekend for my wedding: rehearsal dinner, day-of getting ready for bridal party, photos, and accommodations for all parents. We comfortably fit 8 adults sleeping (could have easily fit a handful more!), and had plenty of space on wedding day for 10 gals to get ready. When making wedding plans, we originally considered getting multiple hotel rooms down the road, but this option far exceeded those ideas; financially it made so much more sense, and allowed everyone to be under one roof for such an important occasion. The 3rd floor master suite was absolutely perfect for all of my bridal getting-ready photos. Unfortunately the weather wasn't as cooperative as we would have hoped, but the amazing views, and easy access of the cottage from downtown Mystic completely made up for it. No one wanted to leave at the end of our stay! We took plenty of photos under the 1st floor deck, and in front of the many picture windows around the house. This home has everything we needed and more. Paul was a pleasure to work with as well! My family already has plans to rent this house again in the future- it was that amazing!! Thank you Paul for a wonderful experience- we look forward to visiting again soon!"

Lake Candlewood Travel Tips

Summer Vacations at Lake Candlewood Vacation Rentals

Lake Candlewood is a popular summer vacation destination because of all the water sport activities available. Boating and fishing are the most popular pastimes and on any given day, you can see a number of crafts out on the water. In season, there are a number of fishing tournaments that take place. When you stop in at one of the lakeside communities for bait, you should be able to get the scoop on where the big fish are biting. Weekends see many visitors escaping the cities for some outdoor recreation on the lake and the towns have a busy vibe. Weekdays are quieter and you can enjoy the serenity of the lake. Take a hike along the lakeshore or browse the many stores and shops in town. In the winter, the landscape becomes a wonderful winter retreat. Many of the vacation homes have large fireplaces. You can snuggle up with a good book and enjoy the views over the lake.

Family Fun at Lake Candlewood Lake Houses

Lakes are always great destinations for family vacations. Pack the fishing tackle, waterskis and boating gear, and be prepared for many sunny days out on the water. Many of the vacation homes are located right on the lakeshore. Some are within club communities that offer additional recreational activities with kids' clubs in summer time. Parents can enjoy a leisurely game of golf or tennis while kids are kept entertained. Many families can be seen getting up early and heading out onto the lake to fish in the morning. Pack a picnic lunch and head down to the lakeshore for a day of swimming, games and recreation.

If you have your own boat, you can hire a vacation home with a private mooring so that you have easy access to the lake. To operate your boat, you will need to have a valid certification. There are also speed limits in certain areas of the lake that you need to familiarize yourself with before heading out. Many vacation homes are large enough to accommodate more than one family with loft areas and decks where the kids can keep themselves entertained. For a scuba experience, you can join one of the dive charters and explore the communities that used to stay in the valley before the lake was formed in 1920. Streets and old farm equipment still line the lake floor and the great visibility makes an excellent diving experience.

Traveling to Lake Candlewood Cottages

Lake Candlewood is conveniently located approximately a 90-minute drive from New York City. This makes it an ideal weekend or summer vacation destination. If you are visiting from other parts of North America, you can fly into JFK or any of the other major airports.
