  • Wonderful abode

"This little barn is delightful and my husband, teenage son and I really appreciated our five nights here. The place was very comfortable, tastefully decorated, very peaceful with lovely views. Saw wild turkeys in the field beyond! Was there for parent's weekend at a nearby prep school, and this made the perfect base to operate from. We didn't get to spend much time just enjoying the barn because we were out most of the time, but it would be a nice place to kick back and read, write and relax. The owner was very helpful and great to communicate with and kindly accommodated changes to our planned arrival and departure dates. Only hitch was that internet was out during our stay; we didn't let the owner know until after we departed, but I am confident it would have been fixed lickety-split if we had. The area is beautiful."

  • Son's wedding week

"We had several family members in town for a 5 day reunion and our sons wedding. The house was comfortable, clean and had plenty of amenities. The playscape, kayaks, yard, river - all were used and enjoyed! One note of warning - don't try to kayak at low tide! There isn't enough water depth. But when the tide is in, it was great!"

  • Great family summer beach rental

"Very large, beautifully decorated and livable house with fabulous private yard and 2 block walk to Compo Beach. We stayed here for a week as our summer vacation out of NYC. There was enough space for both of our kids and our guests and their kids to all have their own rooms. Backyard was great for entertaining and playing with kids with grill, hammock, large trampoline... Awesome upstairs playroom filled with toys. Owner very friendly and accomodating, left details instructions and tips for things to do in the area."

  • Charming Retreat

"We stayed for the week leading up to Thanksgiving to get a little R&R before the holiday season madness, and that is exactly what we got! The house is very well appointed and was perfect for my husband and I and our small dog who really enjoyed country living. The weather was perfect for cozying up to the fireplace and cooking at home in the gorgeous kitchen. It was easy to get in and out of town to stock up on all supplies we needed and we also enjoyed several great day hikes in the surrounding area. There is also a very nice dog park located in town for our little one to stretch her legs. George was extremely courteous and expedited the process for our last minute booking. We will definitely be back!"

Lake Candlewood Travel Tips

Summer Vacations at Lake Candlewood Vacation Rentals

Lake Candlewood is a popular summer vacation destination because of all the water sport activities available. Boating and fishing are the most popular pastimes and on any given day, you can see a number of crafts out on the water. In season, there are a number of fishing tournaments that take place. When you stop in at one of the lakeside communities for bait, you should be able to get the scoop on where the big fish are biting. Weekends see many visitors escaping the cities for some outdoor recreation on the lake and the towns have a busy vibe. Weekdays are quieter and you can enjoy the serenity of the lake. Take a hike along the lakeshore or browse the many stores and shops in town. In the winter, the landscape becomes a wonderful winter retreat. Many of the vacation homes have large fireplaces. You can snuggle up with a good book and enjoy the views over the lake.

Family Fun at Lake Candlewood Lake Houses

Lakes are always great destinations for family vacations. Pack the fishing tackle, waterskis and boating gear, and be prepared for many sunny days out on the water. Many of the vacation homes are located right on the lakeshore. Some are within club communities that offer additional recreational activities with kids' clubs in summer time. Parents can enjoy a leisurely game of golf or tennis while kids are kept entertained. Many families can be seen getting up early and heading out onto the lake to fish in the morning. Pack a picnic lunch and head down to the lakeshore for a day of swimming, games and recreation.

If you have your own boat, you can hire a vacation home with a private mooring so that you have easy access to the lake. To operate your boat, you will need to have a valid certification. There are also speed limits in certain areas of the lake that you need to familiarize yourself with before heading out. Many vacation homes are large enough to accommodate more than one family with loft areas and decks where the kids can keep themselves entertained. For a scuba experience, you can join one of the dive charters and explore the communities that used to stay in the valley before the lake was formed in 1920. Streets and old farm equipment still line the lake floor and the great visibility makes an excellent diving experience.

Traveling to Lake Candlewood Cottages

Lake Candlewood is conveniently located approximately a 90-minute drive from New York City. This makes it an ideal weekend or summer vacation destination. Many visitors head out from the East Coast's cities to enjoy nature and appreciate the quiet serenity of Lake Candlewood. The easiest way to get to the area is by car. If you are visiting from other parts of North America, you can fly into JFK or any of the other major airports. From there, you can collect a rental car and enjoy a scenic drive up to Lake Candlewood from the airport.
