Overview of Westbrook Vacation Rentals
Traveling to Westbrook Vacation Rentals
Westbrook is a small seaside community located on Connecticut’s Atlantic coast. It lies almost midway between Boston and New York City. Because of this, it can be easily accessed by both road and rail. To avoid traffic congestion, many visitors opt to travel by rail. Trains from Boston, New York and other towns make stops at Westport station on a daily basis. Details of schedules and travel times can be obtained from any of the local stations. If you do choose to drive, expect the trip to take between two to three hours, depending on traffic and the route you take. The nearest regional airport is in Hartford but most travelers from further afield will fly into either Boston Logan International Airport or JFK near New York City. From either of these hubs, you can hire a car or link up with the rail system to get to Westbrook.
Fun Summer Activities at Westbrook Beach Houses
Westbrook has four miles of beautiful beachfront which is dotted with vacation homes, restaurants and seaside shops. The town was founded around the industry of shipbuilding and still has strong maritime traditions. There are several marinas with boat slips where you can launch and moor your boat. If you don’t have your own boat, there are local charter companies where you can rent a boat for a day. If you enjoy paddling, there are several shops that rent sea kayaks. Most often, you will simply want to enjoy lazy days on the beach, sunbathing and playing with the kids.
If you visit toward the end of August, you will have the opportunity to share in the experience of the annual Westbrook Muster. It’s an all-weekend affair that brings Fife and Drum Corps from all over the region. Regaled in traditional uniforms, the troops have a parade through the town on Saturday morning. The rest of the weekend includes military events, complete with a firing of cannons and other festivities.
Just 30 minutes away is the town of Mystic Seaport. This is a great place to visit for a family outing. There is a superb aquarium where you can see the wonders of the underwater world. You can also visit the Naval Submarine Museum where there are exhibits of naval nuclear submarines. You can see inside and walk the length of these amazing underwater craft. There is also a boardwalk with loads of shops and entertainment centers.
If you’d like to explore some of the interior, take the Essex Steam train that runs alongside the Connecticut River. This is a wonderfully scenic trip that is fun for the whole family.
Best Time of Year to Visit Westbrook Cottages
Westbrook is best known as a summer vacation destination. From May through September, the beachfront becomes a hive of activity, especially over weekends and during the peak school vacation times. If you want to visit the area when there is less bustle, aim for September and October before the winter chill sets in. Days are usually still quite warm and in the evening, when it does get a little cooler, you can snuggle in front of the fireplace in your vacation home.
