  • Charming, relaxing, but limited beach amenities

"We just spent 16 nights in this charming cottage. The photos and descriptions in the HomeAway/VRBO listing are accurate, and the owners have furnished the place very nicely. The patio is especially nice, for morning coffee and evening outdoor meals (with fresh herbs available in pots). The kitchen is very well stocked with pots, pans and everything you could possible need for cooking. The shed has lots of beach-related supplies. The WiFi is unusually fast, with download speeds of 27 Mbps. The neighborhood is great for walking and folks are friendly. There are a few negatives, however. Be aware that the cottage is in the Cedar Crest Association, not the Chapman Beach Association. You only have access to the Cedar Crest beach, which is approximately 35 steps wide and 9 steps deep, at mid-tide; in other words, it’s a very small beach space. We ended up going to the Hammonasset State Park beach, which is 12 miles away. We have an annual pass to the park, but if you don’t have the pass, it costs $9/day if you are a CT resident and $15/day if a non-resident ($13/$22 on weekends). Also, there is no gas grill, just the charcoal Weber version and the television is not HD and is pretty much basic cable, which is unusual for a rental at this price level. Overall, we had a fun and relaxing experience and the owners were easy to work with."

  • Very, very happy with this decision

"This house was compact, clean, convenient - a delight in every way. We even managed okay with just one bath and seven people. Very near a great beach (short walking distance). And very convenient to the things we like to do as a family: Mystic Seaport; miniature golf at Saybrook Point; Gillette's Castle; Chester ferry; Essex steam train; Johnny Ad's restaurant in Old Saybrook - and especially the Deep River Fife & Drum Corps Muster on the 19th (always the 3rd Saturday in July). Grew up nearby but have lived in Texas for 20 years - and definitely will use this house as a great place for a "base of operations" when visiting the East or coming back again for the Muster."

  • A Treasure Close To Home

"Our stay at the marsh studio was truly a wonderful experience . . . one of our best vacations ever! We arrived in the rain and were so captivated by the contemporary design, sculptures and various works of art that we soon forgot about the rain. Ilsa and Bob are wonderful hosts. A bottle of wine, orange juice and the makings for coffee were very much appreciated. Their dog, Tilda, (a lab/something?? mix) was a fine greeter . . . energetic and loving and an added bonus for us. We decided to stay local this summer and were amazed at all there was to do in the Westbrook area. We saw a great concert at the Kate Theater in Old Saybrook and a few days later we went to the Goodspeed Opera House to see a wonderful musical. Both theaters are unique and conveniently located. The Chamard Winery in Clinton and lunch deckside overlooking the vineyards was great. We had a terrific waiter and the food was delicious. There are so many restaurants to choose from . . . The Boom at Pilots Point Marina has the view of the boats and the sunset, Lenny and Joe's was a favorite for eat in and take out. We love lobster so the Lobster Landing in Clinton was a great choice for hot lobster rolls and butter. For times when we wanted to stay put . . . the kitchen at the studio and outside grilling made dining in fun. West Beach was great for Barbara who LOVES the ocean and the fishing/crabbing and kayaking on the tidal river was Duncan's top of the list relaxing activities. Just sitting on the dock with a morning cup of coffee was so special. There was more that we did and much more to do next time and there will be a next time. Simply put, being there was WONDERFUL!!"

Westbrook Travel Tips

Traveling to Westbrook Vacation Rentals

Westbrook is a small seaside community located on Connecticut’s Atlantic coast. It lies almost midway between Boston and New York City. Because of this, it can be easily accessed by both road and rail. To avoid traffic congestion, many visitors opt to travel by rail. Trains from Boston, New York and other towns make stops at Westport station on a daily basis. Details of schedules and travel times can be obtained from any of the local stations. If you do choose to drive, expect the trip to take between two to three hours, depending on traffic and the route you take. The nearest regional airport is in Hartford but most travelers from further afield will fly into either Boston Logan International Airport or JFK near New York City. From either of these hubs, you can hire a car or link up with the rail system to get to Westbrook.

Fun Summer Activities at Westbrook Beach Houses

Westbrook has four miles of beautiful beachfront which is dotted with vacation homes, restaurants and seaside shops. The town was founded around the industry of shipbuilding and still has strong maritime traditions. There are several marinas with boat slips where you can launch and moor your boat. If you don’t have your own boat, there are local charter companies where you can rent a boat for a day. If you enjoy paddling, there are several shops that rent sea kayaks. Most often, you will simply want to enjoy lazy days on the beach, sunbathing and playing with the kids.

If you visit toward the end of August, you will have the opportunity to share in the experience of the annual Westbrook Muster. It’s an all-weekend affair that brings Fife and Drum Corps from all over the region. Regaled in traditional uniforms, the troops have a parade through the town on Saturday morning. The rest of the weekend includes military events, complete with a firing of cannons and other festivities.

Just 30 minutes away is the town of Mystic Seaport. This is a great place to visit for a family outing. There is a superb aquarium where you can see the wonders of the underwater world. You can also visit the Naval Submarine Museum where there are exhibits of naval nuclear submarines. You can see inside and walk the length of these amazing underwater craft. There is also a boardwalk with loads of shops and entertainment centers.

If you’d like to explore some of the interior, take the Essex Steam train that runs alongside the Connecticut River. This is a wonderfully scenic trip that is fun for the whole family.
