  • Great Place - Bugs not so Great

"We arrived on Friday after an 11.5hr road trip from ATL to find the house swarming in Midget Flies. I'll get to that in a bit. The house was very nice and decorated with all kinds of fishing stuff, which is right up my alley. The bedrooms were clean and neat with each decorated differently to satisfy varied tastes. The master was on the main floor which was great considering we had teens with us. It has 2.5 baths, but both full baths are downstairs. No biggie for me, but the guests we had didn't like having to go downstairs to bathe. The staple in the house was the ping pong table. The kids played on it constantly. Outside the deck was large and so was the hot tub, which was also used a lot. The sand on the beach was clean and soft, considering it was at a lake. The dock was nice and lift was great for putting our boat up without having to pull it out of the water daily. Over all the place was pretty nice. Now to the bad part, the bugs. I grew up on the Gulf Coast and am use to nats and mosquitos. It goes with the territory, especially in South Florida. However, the bugs we had the entire week would make you think another plague was in full swing. The Midget Flies were out in swarms. I mean swarms as in they covered the house to almost change it's color. They were all over the house, doors, windows, deck, grass, bushes and dock. They were especially bad in the mornings and evenings with the wind coming out of the East. It was impossible to keep them out of the house. Every morning we swept up at least a dust pan full of flies, the dead ones. At night, the hum of the buzzing was loud enough to be heard troughout the house. By mid-week, the smell outside was bad due to bug droppings everywhere. I was told by the landscaper that this is a regular occurance during the spring, especially with a constant wind out of the East, the house being on the western shore of the lake. Without the bugs, this would have been one great vacation and location for it. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. We may try this rental again, during a different time of the year, but will definately avoid it during the spring months for sure. This was just our experience, during this particular time period. I'm sure it's different at other times and what a great place to enjoy the lake."

  • Great House, Great Location!!

"We had a fantastic stay. The owners were super easy to work with and very quick to respond to inquiries. The house was very clean and had plenty of room. We had two families (each with 2 young kids) plus two sets of in-laws. Each couple had their own bathroom which was very convenient. The kitchen was fully loaded with all necessary dishes and cookware. Only negative we could find is the quality of the knives-- we grilled some meat one night and could barely cut through it- pretty minor detail and probably an easy fix :) The neighborhood is great - playground is right around the corner. Plus, an easy drive to all the attractions. Thanks for a great stay! We'll definitely look this property up again in the future."

  • Met Our Expectations

"We truly enjoyed the home. It met our needs wonderfully with two master bedrooms! The house was as described in VBRO. We had a lovely vacation with our family. The owner contacted us a couple of times during our stay to make sure things were going well and if we had any questions. We would use the home again when we are in the area."

The Villages Travel Tips

The retirement community of The Villages is located in sunny, central Florida. It is 20 miles south of Ocala and 57 miles northwest of Orlando in Lake, Sumter and Marion counties. This development is home to more than 51,000 people and the fastest-growing micropolitan area in the U.S. as well as the fastest-growing small town.

The Villages' history dates back to the 1960s when Harold Schwartz, a Michigan businessman, sold land to retirees looking to escape to a warmer climate. Today, the descendants of Harold Schwartz and his son H. Gary Morse still control The Villages.

The Villages Attractions

The master-planned retirement community offers several forms of recreational activity. The Villages has numerous golf courses and offers "Free Golf for Life." Thirty-two of the courses are 9-hole layouts while the remaining 10 are country club championship courses. Two additional courses will be 27-hole layouts with a total of 621 holes of golf by the end of a final course build?-out.

Visit the Florida Carriage Museum and Resort and take a step back in time. This museum is home to the largest collection of antique horse-drawn carriages in the U.S. and is one of the largest in the world. There are more than 160 carriages from Europe and America, including the 1850 Ambruster Dress Chariot that once carried Emperor of Austria Franz Joseph and his wife, Elisabeth.

You can do plenty of shopping without leaving The Villages. There are boutiques scattered throughout the town squares, including many of the country's most popular brands. There are also grocery stores, pharmacies and superstores that will help you find everything you need. You can even venture throughout The Villages on your golf cart, the most fun way to travel through a small town.
