"My husband and I recently visited the Cabana House for our first year anniversary. IT. WAS. PERFECT.
We were looking for a place we could get away and relax, snorkel, hike, lay on the beach, surf, and pretend we didn't really live in a big city for a week. In short, we wanted a beach vacation we could approach at our own pace without too many tourists, experience as much nature as possible without camping, and be alone with each other.
We could not have found a more perfect place to rent!
The cabana house itself is charming, beautiful and has a fabulous history. It is surrounded by live oaks dripping with Spanish moss, and a stunning variety of tropical flowers and palms. Our favorite part of staying in this house was the picturesque courtyard and the pool with lion fountains at each corner (which looked like Katherine Hepburn should be lounging by it)...there were tree frogs, anoles and birds, and an orange tree in the private terrace off the back of the cabana house. In the morning it was a perfect place to meditate as the wind gently blew through the bamboo grove. The enclosed outdoor shower was a lovely addition to the private pool, and a great place to feel the sun and breeze and see the flowers.
The beach was a short 10 minute drive away, and there are many public beaches (several are practically empty even during peak hours) with beautiful views of the Atlantic ocean, and a great place to go shelling, surfing, or take a guided turtle walk to see some endangered sea turtles laying their eggs. It is also close to the St. Sebastian Inlet where we swam with manatees, and saw a large variety of reef animals.
Just off the back of the cabana house is a large yard that leads to a dock. Fantastic place for an early morning kayak trip around the mangroves that grow there, and to see the natural oyster beds, the mullet jump and dolphins play was a huge treat! You can also sit and watch the sun set on the dock...breathtaking!
The hosts were extremely intuitive, helpful and kind...with accurate info on the best places to eat and where to shop.
We would definitely come back to this rental and stay longer. The pace of this little town is unique in itself, and encourages city dwellers to SLOW DOWN and enjoy island life for a while. We loved the quaint antique shops and eclectic boutiques to visit during the hottest parts of the afternoon.
We left unwillingly, wishing we had more time...but with great memories."
