  • More Bang for your bucks

"I am reluctant to give this secret away to everyone. The dates will get tight now. We've stayed in a lot of rental homes and this is the best for the money we've experienced. 1. Location looks remote, but the water is deep and not that far to the ocean or the bay side. A very large boat, over 22 feet, might have a problem maneuvering in the canal, if the captain is not well practiced. Gas station almost within throwing distance; West Marine a couple miles down the road; and the place was easy to find. We liked that we did not have to go way into the Keys. Elbow reef is offshore. The property is beautifully landscaped and secluded due to the foliage. We enjoyed the boat rides through the mangroves; African Queen-style scenery. 2. The boat ramp (key provided by Jim) is a bit shallow, a float on trailer might have problems; but a steeper ramp is available at near by Pennekamp and a travel lift is available at Buzzard's Roost Marina (Cove). Jim can give you tips on other benefits he might have. 3. The dock behind the house is the best we have experienced. My 85 yo dad had little difficulty getting on and off the boat. Fresh water is available with the hose to wash off dive gear and the outside shower with hot water was fantastic. 4. Jim has included everything the average family would need to have an enjoyable experience. We are outdoor enthusiasts, we found plenty of room to get all your toys (and Jim's) organized and maintained on the property. And, enough room for two or three boats along the dock. Other reviews have explained what's there. Jim is very accommodating with information and the most personable owner we've ever encountered. I ask anyone renting the place to be respectful and honorable with the property, as Jim has trusted folks with alot of access to personal property to make your visit enjoyable. We've not seen this much accommodation before. It was like borrowing a friend's home. 5. Negatives: not many; it's not a perfect world. As has been stated, the bathrooms are a consideration; but if you are a large group of strangers, you probably will not stay here to begin with. (Pull out the big bucks and get a mansion.) I would put a half bath in the big ground floor room, at least. It would be nice to have king beds in two of the bedrooms that were big enough, but we seldom see that accommodation in any rental home. THIS WAS THE CLEANEST HOME WE'VE EVER STAYED IN. Some lights by the shower and parking area? We would rent again."

  • Perfect Holiday!

"We stayed for a week with our 11 year old and 5 year old and it could not have been more idyllic. The view was heavenly especially at sunrise. On the days we wanted to rest at the house, the shallow pool was perfect for keeping the kids occupied and playing nicely with minimum worry for the grown-ups. We explored in the kayaks daily, finding iguanas and egrets on each trip. We lazed in the hammock on the small, private beach while the kids built sand castles. We watched some football on the large TV and slept in late in the comfy beds. The internet worked well for us so we could check work emails as needed. The kitchen was well equipped and there is a Publix nearby. We also ventured out and discovered lots of yummy restaurants. We made a day trip to Key West, swam with the dolphins at Theatre of the Sea, fed the tarpons at Robbie's, and took a glass bottom boat ride at Pennekamp State Park right next door. The owners were lovely to work with. We highly recommend this house and hope to be back next year!"

  • Great Family Vacation

"Just arrived home from probably the best vacation ever - family vacation for 7 of us. From the moment we walked in - smelled great and looked great (even better than the pictures). After a great dinner & cocktails at the Pilot House Marina & Restaurant (service was great too) we spent our first of many relaxing nights on the upper deck, watching the sun set, the lights twinkle and feeling that great ocean breeze while playing cards and enjoying being together. After a quick trip to Publix in the morning, breakfast on the boat, then off to explore. We enjoyed a local beach and John Pennekamp State Park where my granddaughter enjoyed playing in the "sand". The kids (ages 37 down to 24) rented paddle boats & a kayaks - which were delivered right to the boat Dinner on the boat with fresh seafood we purchased from the Fishery right across the way. Beds were very comfortable, plenty of room to be together and plenty of place to have privacy. Gail & Michelle, thank you for answering all our questions, you were great throughout the whole process and we have already recommended you to family & friends!!"

  • Amazing is an understatement

"My mom and I stayed here and this was by far the best location we've stayed at in the Keys. The photos are completely accurate and are the peaceful view you can plan on. The condo has everything needed and offers the peace and quiet you can't get at most of the other rentals in the Keys. The condo is on Long Key, centrally located within the Keys and an easy drive to lots of excellent excursions - or to just to stay and lounge at the condo. The owner, Jerry, was extremely helpful and provided a lot of great info. The condo looks out over the state park (the entrance is a half mile walk from the end of the street with a bicycle/pedestrian path to and beyond the state park entrance). The owners have kayaks (single and double), a canoe and bicycles and there was always one available (there are three other units in the building - two 1-bedroom units on top and two 2-bedroom units on the bottom, including this one). Plenty of parking room for 4 cars to easily park without parking anyone in the parking area. The view from the condo was just as shown. We saw sharks, stingrays and numerous fish and birds every day. We say full grown nurse sharks a couple times and a full grown green sea turtle one morning. I took a kayak out a couple times (once around the estuary and once out to the bay and even had a sandbar shark swim alongside me for several minutes). Out on the kayak, it was so peaceful and private that I felt as if I was the only person in the world. Long Key isn't developed other than the town that this condo is located in (Layton) and only has one small convenience store and gas station so you may want to go to Tavernier or Marathon for supplies (about 20 minutes drive). I also highly recommend visiting the Turtle Hospital in Marathon. It was very educational and great for both adults and children."
