  • The Makings of a Great Vacation

"Loved every minute of out stay! House was a great place with great views of the water and the private dock was perfect for fishing or just sitting. We saw every kind of bird, including a flamingo, had our own alligator to observe and watched racoons fish. The furniture was very comfortable as were the beds. Only issue was the water in the kitchen and second bath...it smelled and tasted terrible. In the master bath it was fine. Guess place either has two seperate systems, or filtration system was not working properly. Reported that and was assured it would be looked at. Only downside and it was not a biggy. We will return. Cedar Key is funky great, fishing is wonderful."

  • We will be back

"My wife and I, and our Golden Retriever spent nearly four months at the Lake House from early 2014 to May 1 2014. We enjoyed both the house and the surrounding area very much. As someone said in an earlier review, “the pictures don’t do the house justice.” I am not sure why that it true; the pictures accurately show the house. I concluded that there must be some type of Gestalt effect where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It is a large house which looks even larger because of the windows. Nearly every room has large windows looking out onto the surrounding property, and the porch has fine mesh screen giving the illusion of looking through glass. As the photos show, there are two ponds close to the house and large open areas near the ponds. Our dog enjoyed the pond and watching the ample wild life: Sand Hill Cranes, deer, hawks, etc. She did resent the occasional visits to her pond by a small gator. If you are interested in star gazing, the property affords a perfect place to view stars: no pollution and an absence of “city lights.” It is a great area for walking, and our dog and I walked a couple of miles every day. Although we don’t play tennis, there is a first rate tennis court fairly close to the house. Because we stayed for a long period of time, we were able to get to know the area quite well. I joined a small, but totally adequate health club in the nearby town of Hawthorne. We even got to attend a chile cook off in Melrose, another nearby town. For a nominal charge, you could sample any or all of the twenty entries in the cook off. The library in Melrose is small, but has a great paperback book exchange. There are two good restaurants in Melrose: The Blue Water Restaurant and Betty’s Pizza and Subs. Both have websites, and Betty’s has very good pizza. Easily our favorite restaurant, however, was Johnny’s B BQ in another small town in the area. It too has a website. For those who need the attractions of a larger town, Gainesville is a very easy drive. We ended up going to Gainesville far more frequently than we wished. My wife began to develop severe headaches, and we made numerous trips to the University of Florida’s medical school. Her problems had nothing to do with the house or the area. Instead, we discovered that she had Temporal Arteritis. Thankfully, the hospital at the University of Florida is a teaching hospital with numerous high qualit"
