"We just returned from an amazing vacation in Destin. We really loved Silver Dunes. The inside pictures accurately portray this unit, (the palm trees have grown so the balcony view is a little obstructed). The price was very reasonable. We liked the small complex and private, less crowded beach. We enjoyed the grassy area between the two buildings. The pool was very warm and enjoyable. It is in a prime location. We liked being able to walk to Chick-fil-a and Shake’s Frozen Custard; Merlin’s pizza was delicious and very reasonable.
We have traveled to South Carolina and other beaches in the past and Destin is by far the prettiest beach. We loved the clear water and the white sand, which did not burn our feet. We had great beach chair service by George at reasonable cost. All of the staff at Silver Dunes were very friendly, from Susie at the desk to the security guards at the gate.
The only disappointment was the busy 98 highway on which the complex sits. Traffic is non-stop and traffic laws are not obeyed or enforced. We were almost hit multiple times while trying to cross the street, (in broad daylight and in a cross-walk). Destin needs to add more cross-walks or enforce traffic laws before someone is seriously injured or killed.
We were surprised to find that the sofa bed was broken by a note left on the refrigerator, but the air mattress worked out okay. This condo was not as updated as other condos in the complex, but is priced accordingly."

"We love this place! This condo has the most amazing view! You really can't be any closer to the beach. We love sitting on the balcony, watching the dolphins swim by. The condo is spacious and comfortable. Love having the ice maker for our frozen concoctions! The king bed in the master bedroom is so comfortable and I sleep so well and wake up refreshed. We like to leave the door to the balcony open an bit at night so we can hear the waves. This is our 5th time staying here. David is always gracious and helpful. The staff at the Gulfgate is very efficient. The pool was cold this year, about the same temp as the Gulf, so we weren't in the water much. The only thing we ever wish for is a hot tub by the pool. Looking forward to next Spring Break already."

"This is a GREAT condo right on the beach. The condo itself is very nice, fully equipped with comfy furniture, big TVs in the living room and bedroom, everything you'd need in the kitchen. We didn't do any actual cooking, but it was nice to have a kitchen to do breakfast and sandwiches. It's way up on the 16th floor, which provides a beautiful view!
The building is a little older, but clean and well maintained. There's a little restaurant in the lobby that has very good food and drinks. It's the usual beach cafe fare, pub food with a few seafood things, but I also had a very excellent burger from there one night. The cafe doesn't have a beach view or outside seating, which seems like kind of a missed opportunity, but no matter because they send a roving waitress out to the beach so you can order right from your beach lounger! One of our favorite things was to get takeout dinner and just take it up to our room and eat on our own balcony.
Another great little perk is that in the lobby there is a free DVD rental thing - it works just like a Redbox type deal but it's free with a little card that comes with the room. It had tons of new releases and a few older favorites and kid's movies. A small thing but just a really nice touch!
One really important thing if you want a front-row beach chair: go as soon as you arrive to the umbrella rental hut and reserve for your whole stay. If you really care you might even want to call ahead (look up La Dolce Vita rental co). The condo has beach chairs and an umbrella, but the whole beachfront is occupied by the rental umbrellas so you'd have to set up behind at least 2 rows of people. Of course there are always the couple of people who indecorously bring chairs to set up right in front of the folks who paid for umbrellas, but... what are you gonna do. The rental hut also does kayak and paddle board rentals, parasailing, and other adventurey things to do.
The location is excellent, even if you didn't have a car. Right across the (kind of busy) street is Shakes, a delicious retro-cute frozen custard place, along with some fastfood options (Waffle House, Chick-Fil-A, Wendy's) and a diner. Twice during our week we walked down the beach to the Back Porch, which is about a half mile away but a nice walk along the ocean, and walked back with our frozen drinks.
All in all a really great beach vacation condo! I can't say enough great things about it. We loved it and plan to go back often!"
