"We loved our stay at Coconuts' upper level beach house. We felt totally at home and as if we were in the hospitality of a friend. We walked in to a bright and spacious place with lots of comfort for the whole family. The kitchen had all the basics covered. We traveled possibly 3 miles to a Publix to stock up on groceries for the week.
The beaches there are amazing. We had a short walk, across the street, to the beach access, which opened onto beautiful powdery white sand, gently rolling sand dunes and clear blue green water. The owner, Mary Jo, has provided beach towels, lounge chairs, a large umbrella, various beach toys and a cart to haul it all down to your chosen spot on an uncrowded beach.
The waters were warm and pretty shallow all the way out to the sand bar, maybe a couple hundred yards out. They can get choppy, but are not good for surfing. We did see several paddle boarders and kayakers. What I think we loved best, besides the seclusion of the beach was all the sea life we saw. There were dolphins, tarpon, sting rays, a manta ray, lots of schooling fish and groups of manatees we saw and got close to on 3 different occasions. Our kids collected clams, coquinas, sand dollars, and many various shells, coral and sea sponges. There were many turtle hatching areas on the beach, which did not hatch in the time we were there, but are ready to hatch any time and would have made a fantastic memory if they had.
The owner checked in on us a couple times through email during the week and gave us a lot of helpful information about the island and the restaurants in the area.
I can highly recommend Ginny and Jane E.s Cafe Bakery and Store. It's a one of a kind place with good food, great coffee, and a unique atmosphere and friendly staff. We were able to pick up sunglasses, flip flops and goggles from there and they have a lot of nice decorative pieces and furnishings created on the island. We also really enjoyed the Anna Maria Oyster Bar, which you have to actually go off the island for, but it is well worth it. It has a great, fun, family atmosphere, very friendly staff and the best food of any of the restaurants we went to. I can also recommend the Sand Bar restaurant which has the best setting, being right on the beach. You can be seated at your table dining on good food while digging your toes in the sand. I think they are a little over priced, but it's probably just due to the great location. We thought the Waterfront was overrated."
