"My family very much enjoyed our stay in the beautiful Captiva Vacation Home this past January. We have stayed many, many times on Sanibel and decided to try Captiva this year. It was a very good decision, we enjoyed the spacious, clean, well-equipped home much more than we anticipated. We brought along our own fishing poles and made good use of the fishing dock behind the property. We enjoyed walking our dog around the beautiful yard and noticing the many different fauna. We were fortunate while we were there to see dolphins, an eagle, alligators (at Ding Darling) and of course came back with some beautiful shells. The owners were very helpful with dinner suggestions and side activities, I highly recommend the Edison-Ford Winter Estates tour in Ft. Myers. The walk across the street was made much easier by the use of the cart provided along with the beach chairs, umbrella, coolers, etc. This was the first time we had stayed at a place that was so well-equipped. The kitchen had absolutely everything we needed. The ONLY helpful comment I can make is that the beds were a little worn and were hard on our backs. My son and brother-in-law had both had back surgery and had a difficult time sleeping. Fortunately, this is an easy fix to make a wonderful vacation home the absolute BEST on the island!"

"My husband and I had the pleasure to spend the week at 'Endless Summer' with our 2 sons and their girlfriends, and my sister....I must admit I was leery to go to Florida in August, but we were pleasantly surprised at not only the beauty of Captiva but this perfect home!!! spacious, well appointed, tranquill and just steps from a beautiful beach...living in the northeast minutes away from NYC we all enjoyed this peaceful, tropical property and never once felt like we were in Florida-we were all swept away by the serenity of the island. Never were bored, at our finger tips-bike rentals, boat rentals, scuba diving, snorkeling, swimming, paddle boarding and just plan old relaxing in the sun. Walking distance to some colorful and fun eateries and short driving distance to many attractions. Would recommend this property for familys of all ages. Hope to visit again in 2015!!!!"

  • Paradise Found

"In the truest sense of the word, our vacation at this home was a paradise. The design, construction & decor of this house, pool and landscaping had us sink into luxury. Our days began and ended on the lookout balcony - sunrise & sunset at treetop level, with a bird serenade. Then it was a tough choice to decide where to spend the day: the balcony overlooking the pool at the table playing games, the warm pool with it's overflowing spa, or lounging on the patio - all are screened. No bugs! Or just sinking into the soft leather sofa in the so comfortable living room after a hard day on the beach or shopping in town. The gulf cart & elevator were vey helpful to our disabled sister-in-law. Our vacation at the Lazy Palm was so quiet, comfortable and relaxing, we did not want to leave. And we cannot wait to come back."

  • Perfect

"What a great place to stay. When booking the house, Bob was extremely helpful and always quick to respond to any questions that we had. The house was wonderful and the perfect getaway for us. We wanted a home away from home and some privacy which this gave us. We went many nights to the local restaurants (all within walking distance or an easy bike ride - bikes are well worth renting) but also enjoyed cooking in the well-equipped kitchen. The house is tucked away and even on the odd rainy afternoon we enjoyed being inside- reading on the terrace, watching tv or researching the island using the fast internet connection or by leafing through Bob's wide collection of books and local guides. Jensen's, Gordy's dock and the beach were true highlights for us. Captiva is so special and the house, well-maintained, clean, large and accessible, really added to our experience. Thanks Bob and family for sharing with us- an experience we'll never forget!"

Captiva Island Travel Tips

A vacation to Captiva Island in southwest Florida off of the Gulf of Mexico is just what you need to relax. This locale is north of Sanibel Island and popular folklore suggests Captiva got its name from a pirate captain named Jose Gaspar who would hold female prisoners there for ransom.

The island's first inhabitant was an Austrian named William Herbert Binder who crashed offshore near Upper Captiva in 1921. He eventually made his way to Pine Island after building a makeshift raft but returned to Captiva to build a homestead where he was the only resident for 10 years.

Captiva Island Attractions

Turner Beach is the perfect place to go fishing while vacationing in Captiva Island. The beach stretches for 5 miles and has plenty of colorful seashells. Captiva Island is considered one of the best in the world for shelling, a popular activity due to the abundance of them washing up from the gulf. When you're spending a day at Turner Beach, you can lay out in the sun, swim in the clear waters of the Gulf of Mexico or build a sand castle with the kids. Before the sun sets and you head back to your rental for the night, venture down Captiva Drive for a scenic view of giant cactus and tropical flora that thrive in the city's downtown district.

A trip to Captiva Island wouldn't be complete without a stop at The Bubble Room. This world famous, multi-theme restaurant was established 1979 and features decor from the 1930s and 1940s. You can still find many of the original toys that were put in the restaurant when it was founded and the kids will love the Christmas decorations and lights hanging year-round in the front room. The eatery was also the first on the island to use bright pastel colors that are still popular today and menu favorites include Socra cheese, Bubble Bread, Carolina Moons, Tarzan and Eddie Fisherman.

You can also check out Belton Johnson and the Pegasus, Charlie's reefs. Other water sports in Captiva Island include kayaking, canoeing, parasailing and boat tours to see dolphins and manatees.

Dining: Fresh seafood is obviously a must while staying in Captiva Island. Local eateries are the perfect place to sit down and enjoy a meal with the family. There's a wide selection of ethnic foods in the area as well as fine dining for a night out on the town. Some of the restaurants in Captiva Sanibel islands include Keylime Bistro, McT's Shrimp House and Tavern, Holy Smoke and Thistle Lodge.

Shopping: No vacation is complete without a little shopping and there's plenty of it in Captiva Island. You'll find many of the town's shops at the northern end of Captiva Drive and Andy Rosse Lane. There are village paths that lead you to each storefront, many of them selling items such as antiques, casual fashions, pottery, furniture and unique gifts.
