  • The Best!

"Best vacation ever!! (or at least it came close for me). The condo is beautiful and well equipped. The location is outstanding. Beautiful views!! The weather was perfect (mid 80's and sunny all week). Saw dolphins and manatees every day. I was nervous about going Easter week - I thought it might be too crowded but we practically had the beach to ourselves. I can't wait to return. I recommend renting a golf cart."

  • Awesome Stay...

"This condo had everything you would need to relax and enjoy the view. Though the condo needed a little extra TLC prior to our arrival. We were welcome by a herd of dust bunnies and such. Tried to vacuum them up but vacuum left more dirt then when we started. But besides this item, the view, location and pool were outstanding. Where could you go and stay in in less then 2 mins. you were knee deep in the Gulf of Mexico. Make sure you get all the items you will need for your stay before you cross over the bridge. Because once you arrive....you will never want to leave. Can't wait till our next visit."

  • Girl's Getaway

"This home is a perfect location to the wonderful restaurants, beach, and fantastic pool. I have stayed in Captiva before and this home met all of my needs. The home is very well cared for and had everything we needed. The screened in deck was the best to be able to eat meals or enjoy the weather at all times of the day. This home superceeded my expectations and I will definitely look at going back. Thank you!"

  • Wish we were still there! Can't wait to return!

"Our family has been returning to Sanibel and Captiva for many years and it has become a favorite vacation destination for us. We typically rent a condo on Sanibel, but this year were looking to be in an even more relaxing environment with more space, as we had a couple of grandmothers and an aunt joining us for part of our trip. I can't say enough about Bird of Paradise. So thrilled we found this lovely home - it had everything we needed and then some. The owner was super nice and helpful. We booked our trip for our boys' spring break. First - the location - couldn't be in a better spot, unless it was directly ON the beach(which for most of us is not affordable in Captiva). The house was large and open and had enough space for us all to be togehter for quality family time, but plenty of space for everyone to go off on their own. There is a nice size pool (especially compared to the other houses in the island) which we all enjoyed both day and night. We cooked almost all our meals at home and had our choice of indoor dining at the massive dining table (dinner followed by family game nights - the house had evey game you could imagine) or al fresco on the screened porch (where we all gathered in the mornings for breakfast). The kitchen was well equipped making it easy to prepare meals at home. But of course there are several restaurants to visit, which we did as well. The bedrooms were spacious and comfortable. Each had a TV for relaxing in bed after a full day or sun and surf. Our kids enjoyed the pool table and foosball table and would have loved the ping pong table if we could have found the balls. Chapin Lane is quiet and lovely. and it was only a two minute walk onto the beach and only a 4 minute walk to Andy Rosse Lane. The beach was spectacular - clear, warm, calm waters brimming with sea life (we saw a manatee in the ocean about five feet in front of where we were swimming) and gorgeous evening sunsets. It was quiet and peaceful despite the fact that we were there during the tail end of high season. The house was equipped with plenty of beach chairs, beach wagons, umbrellas, boogie boards, etc Right across the road is a fabulous marina which we have frequented for years. Reasonable fees for renting a huge pontoon boat and fishing equipment for a great day trip on the bay. Only negative I can say is that the housekeeping staff needs to do a better job. We had to sweep, vacuum and do laundry when we got there because they had not finished."

Captiva Island Travel Tips

A vacation to Captiva Island in southwest Florida off of the Gulf of Mexico is just what you need to relax. This locale is north of Sanibel Island and popular folklore suggests Captiva got its name from a pirate captain named Jose Gaspar who would hold female prisoners there for ransom.

The island's first inhabitant was an Austrian named William Herbert Binder who crashed offshore near Upper Captiva in 1921. He eventually made his way to Pine Island after building a makeshift raft but returned to Captiva to build a homestead where he was the only resident for 10 years.

Captiva Island Attractions

Turner Beach is the perfect place to go fishing while vacationing in Captiva Island. The beach stretches for 5 miles and has plenty of colorful seashells. Captiva Island is considered one of the best in the world for shelling, a popular activity due to the abundance of them washing up from the gulf. When you're spending a day at Turner Beach, you can lay out in the sun, swim in the clear waters of the Gulf of Mexico or build a sand castle with the kids. Before the sun sets and you head back to your rental for the night, venture down Captiva Drive for a scenic view of giant cactus and tropical flora that thrive in the city's downtown district.

A trip to Captiva Island wouldn't be complete without a stop at The Bubble Room. This world famous, multi-theme restaurant was established 1979 and features decor from the 1930s and 1940s. You can still find many of the original toys that were put in the restaurant when it was founded and the kids will love the Christmas decorations and lights hanging year-round in the front room. The eatery was also the first on the island to use bright pastel colors that are still popular today and menu favorites include Socra cheese, Bubble Bread, Carolina Moons, Tarzan and Eddie Fisherman.
