  • You'll Want to Stay Forever

"Very clean! Well kept and maintained property. Secluded from other homes on the island - very private. Lower level has beach equipment storage, washer/dryer, outdoor shower (for removing beach sand), and a mother-in-law apartment with it's own air conditioner and restroom/shower (perfect for Grandma). Upstairs has wrap around balcony with gas grill, screened-in porch with wicker seating for four, large kitchen and living room with plenty of room for kids to sprawl and plenty of kitchen wares (yay blender) and reverse osmosis drinking system, two bedrooms with K / Q, full bath. Laundry basket and hamper provided. Lots of towels and even a beach bag were in the linen closet! We had an issue with the tub faucet (island water blocked it up) but the owner John replaced it ... it was very handy to have him just at the end of the road. We also rented his golf cart which was a must for getting items from the boat to the house - we arrived after a major storm and dragging luggage over the cart paths would have been a mess. Only suggestions: more hand towels, wash cloths, This rental has no dish washer, but we relied on paper plates and only had to wash cookware. Helpful info: We used Pirate water taxi to get to the island ($10/person/way) - which you want to be on time for (Capt Emmett will let you know that for sure!). We bought groceries and liquor at the Publix in Placida. Groceries were cheaper there than in our home state of Colorado... Liquor comparable. Capt Emmett dropped us off at dock 75 which is the shortest distance to the house, but if John leaves the cart at his dock for you, you'll want to get dropped off at 78/79. The beach is a short walk/golf cart ride away. The sand bard extends quite a ways off shore and I saw teenagers 100 ft out that were only waist deep. Beach had people on it but not overcrowded. Folks brought body boards, paddle boards and kayaks. We saw dolphins off the southern tip of the Island but took a boat ride to see them and manatees (John knows where to find them if you rent a boat). The water was not very clear due to the major storm (tornado and massive rain) prior to our arrival. The water is still pretty cool but the air temp was in the low 80s and perfect throughout our stay. We waded and our young kids played in the waves. To be honest, we didn't want to leave and could have stayed forever. We'd definitely come back and stay with John again. Thanks, John for treating us so well and for all your help!"

  • A place to Escape to from an hectic world, Peacock Lane, Gasparilla Island

"My friend and I decided to get away after a busy season at work. What would be better than a getaway on an island? We chose Little Gasparilla Island .Easy to get to by water taxi. Just make sure to bring provisions and plenty of sun screen lotion..The cottage is cute with plenty of outside space for dining and tanning , inside comfortable with plenty of space and also a place to watch a favorite show on tv. . The view of the long sandy beach is spectacular ! Sunning , swimming in beautiful turquoise water, long walks , shelling and falling asleep to the sound of the ocean. The cottage is clean and cozy. Great place to relax and get away from it all. We would highly recommend it."

  • Way beyond our expectations!

"Even though I had talked with former renters of this property and they had described it in glowing terms, I was beyond thrilled when we arrived at Coconut Hideaway! Our party consisted of my husband and myself, my daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren aged eleven and eight. Each of us immediately loved the house and the location. The decor of the house was enchanting. Very "old Florida" with amazing furniture, lighting, decorative items galore. I never tired of looking at our surroundings. We were there for a week, preparing three meals a day, and there was not a kitchen gadget or tool that we lacked. In fact, several choices were offered as well as a great selection of dishware. It was the same for bedding, towels, games, beach chairs and toys. And the pantry! What a lifesaver! No matter how you plan there is always that forgotten item or two. We never missed a beat with our meal plans as the pantry was so well stocked. The proximity to the beach was perfect without having to peek around other buildings. We could lounge on the spacious porch and watch dolphins swim by and many, many shore birds. The kids loved the water and collecting shells every day. In fact our grandson's birthday was during our stay and even though he was offered opportunities to go to the mainland to celebrate, he chose to stay on the island....."more fun." It goes without saying how gorgeous the sunsets were right there before our eyes. I know how difficult it is to rent a beach house sight-unseen, but I sincerely feel no one would be disappointed in their choice of Coconut Hideaway. Unfortunately we did not get to meet Bud and Laurie, but everyone we spoke to, who knew them, had only the kindest of words. My son-in-law is an avid fisherman and was able to supply us with several meals fresh from the ocean. What a treat that was. My husband and the kids all fished as well. I was a bit anxious about the water taxi, but that proved to be unfounded. They were prompt and very helpful in transporting us back and forth. Actually quite a little adventure in itself. One feature that was very important to us was the element of safety and comfort in our surroundings. We never locked the door. Every person we encountered was friendly and welcoming. Our week flew by and we all left hoping to one day return for another visit to an exceptional spot on an exceptional barrier island."
