  • wedding weekend made perfect

"We rented Bench and Bar to house our extended family for our son's wedding weekend at a nearby vineyard. We slept 11 but hosted the bride's maid luncheon and had plenty of room as we spread out through the living space and onto the deck. The four bedrooms with their baths attached to the living space yet separated by doors was great for the larger numbers. It was well equipped and supplied. The view is amazing. We had a wonderful time and made many great memories. Glad the weather was great bc the road in could be challenging; the price of seclusion. We had several questions along the way and the property owner was quick to respond and most helpful. You will not be disappointed if you choose this property."

  • What a find for a crowd!

"There's nothing like this place for a relaxing annual family reunion. We went with four families including 7 kids between 15 and 21- most said it was our best vacation ever. And this is a crowd that prefers beach vacations (NC Outer Banks). The house is like a luxury hotel but on a quiet finger of a huge lake. We swam across "finger" to state park - nice hiking there. Boathouse has canoe and commercial-grade 4-seat paddle boat. We rented a 28' pontoon boat for a day to explore Lake Hartwell. Explored several islands. Basked on beaches with fish coming right up to us... But back to the house: grounds are beautiful. We fished, had campfires on lakeshore twice under fantastic star canopy. House has high-end finishes and appliances (maybe a little too high-tech - better instructions for the cooktop would help), huge bedrooms, nice baths. Dining area seats 16 not counting additional seating at the adjacent kitchen bar. Two attic dorms are great for kids, and though they don't have doors, acoustics weren't a problem - the walls and doors to the other bedrooms are very soundproof. That said, living room was so big that it was sometimes hard to hear. We joked that it must have been built by the inventor of Windex due to all the glass. Terrific huge screened porch, several decks (with grille) for readings, conversation. We got a lot of use from separate screened hot tub room with piped-in music. Impressive tree swing at edge of lake. The posted photos don't do it justice - I sent Steve (owner) a few more to add to website. Not many other young adults in the area meant we spent more time with each other - a blessing in disguise. Steve was great. When he was away, he had his very nice neighbor stop by to see if we needed anything. My only hesitation in recommending it for families with small kids is the water being so close - just keep an eye on them. "Downtown Café" in Lavonia was excellent. Very much enjoyed visit to Greenville for a day - excellent restaurants, nice (if small) downtown, wonderful downtown waterfalls and park. We never got to Anderson. Overall, we were just too busy enjoying the property and the week just flew by - before we knew it, the it was time to leave, but filled with lots of photos and great memories."

  • Beautiful Lakeside Condo!

"We spent four nights at this 3/3 condo: my dad, my son and his friend. The pictures on the site do not do the condo justice and the pictures are not an oversell. Each area of the condo is well-appointed with neutral colors and natural surfaces. I brought a few items from my own kitchen and most of those items were already at the condo -- a cutting board, wooden spoons, a small boiler. I did get quite a bit of use out of my nonstick fryer w/top that I brought with me for preparing breakfast meats. We thoroughly enjoyed the layout of the condo and are thankful that at least one of the guest bedrooms was on the 2nd floor, the main living floor of the home. It would have been too difficult for my dad to climb the stairs from the garage and then a second flight of stairs to reach a bedroom. One thing was very clear: The owner(s) take pride in their home! Beautiful! Hiawassee itself is a beautifully charming city set amidst Lake Chatuge. The condo is situated such that views encompass both the lake and mountains! If you're looking for peace and quiet, we never heard any noise from neighbors or even the main street. If you're seeking adventure, that too can be found relatively easily. If you simply want to enjoy the lake, then bring (or rent!) a boat and your vacation will be wonderful! We rented a boat on Friday and enjoyed the beautiful lake. We also spent a day at nearby waterfall areas; one was just behind Young Harris College (Cupid Falls, 7 or 8 miles) and the other was in Blairsville (Helton Creek Falls, 25 to 30 miles), just across from Vogel State Park. Admittedly, it took us two tries before we found the waterfall behind Young Harris College. Note: You actually drive through the main entrance, turn left at the stop sign, and then bare to the right, keeping the ball field on your left; it's literally within 1.5 miles from the College entrance. During our stay we drove to Helen a couple times (just over 20 miles away), a very picturesque and quaint German town which reminded us of Solvang, CA. There's lots of family activities in neighboring towns. Hiawassee itself is a beautiful lakefront city. The condo is situated such that views encompass both the lake and mountains! If you're looking for peace and quiet, we never heard any noise from neighboring condos. If you're seeking adventure, that too can be found relatively easy. If you simply want to enjoy the lake, rent or bring a boat and you're vacation will be wonderful!"
