Activities Near North Georgia Mountain Lodging

No matter what time of year it is in the North Georgia Mountains, it delivers the goods on a wealth of activities and exciting things to do for the entire family. Ever since the Blue Ridge Scenic Railroad was erected in 1886, the area has been a tourist hotspot. This has allowed for the towns in the area—Dahlonega, Gainesville, Toccoa—to also become upscale vacation destinations while maintaining their charm and small-town feel.

Take the family to enjoy several of the great outdoor recreational activities such as horseback riding, golfing, camping, hiking, biking, sightseeing, hunting and fishing. Hiking is a very popular pastime for visitors to the area as there are many trails to explore. Springer Mountain, which is located about 30 miles from Ellijay lodging, is not far from the Amicalola Falls where you will discover some of the most beautiful creations of water and plant life. The Appalachian Trail is a great place to explore as it winds through the Georgia Mountain counties of Lumpkin, Union, White, Habersham and Rabun for nearly 80 miles before it crosses into North Carolina. The Cohutta Wilderness also has several great trails that include the Jacks River Trail, where in the summer you can see literally thousands of beautiful butterflies floating above it.

There are also some great easygoing activities such as shopping for antiques in Blue Ridge, taking tours of the town by car or motorcycle, attending the festivals and mountain fairs, purchasing apples from any of the many apple houses in the area, taking an excursion train from Blue Ridge vacation rentals, or dining in any of the great restaurants in town.

North Georgia Mountains Weather

North Georgia Mountain weather can be just as great as the scenery here. The summers here are warm and mild with comfortable evening temperatures. July and August are usually the warmest months with highs reaching into the high 80s and 90s Fahrenheit. Of course, the temperatures are cooler as you climb into higher elevations. Summer nights are still warm but tend to cool off to more tolerant temperatures as the sun sets. Humidity is also frequent in Georgia, although it’s not as extreme as southern Georgia.

December through February are some of the coldest months for the area, where daytime highs only reach to 50 degrees in the daytime and nighttime lows can travel to below freezing. The snow will usually blanket the mountains about twice a year. However, there are some seasons when there is no snow accumulation at all. Precipitation is usually between 50 and 80 inches per year and the majority of it is winter rainfall.

Getting to the North Georgia Mountains Cabin Rentals

You have a few options when you decide to fly into Georgia. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is one of the busiest and largest in the world, so the logical choice would most likely be to fly into Hartsfield. It is the prime destination for travelers to this state for business and pleasure. From there, you can easily rent a car in order to continue your journey to the North Georgia Mountains.

Once you’ve hit the road from the airport, you can choose several scenic routes to find your way to the mountain range, although the major highway is going to be State Route 19 up the middle of the state and the I-85/985 to the northeast. When those two fork near Suwanee, the 985 takes you up through Gainesville while the 85 takes you up to Carnesville. You can choose to explore various routes and roads along the way too, like the Chattahoochee River Road which is a beautiful and colorful side route to take, and the Tallulah River Road which crosses the mountains and puts you on U.S. 441 just north of the Dillard House. The Cohutta Loop is another option which encircles the southern end of the Cohutta Mountains. Last but not least, you can take scenic 197 which is a highway that offers many great stops along the way as it winds for over 50 miles from its humble beginnings near Cornelia. The route numbers in this region change without warning so a good map and patient attitude are musts!
