"We wanted to try staying somewhere inland for the first time and we loved it. The cottage was comfortable and we loved feeding the pig. Such a lovely place. We walked a short distance up the road and visited the Hawaiian Vanilla Company (great vanilla shakes). We went to Honoka'a several times. Such a darling town. If you want to get away from it all, this is the place. My husband and I loved it."

"My wife and I spend the first 3 nights of our honeymoon here and it was the perfect way to start. The location is great! It's far enough off the beaten path that we had plenty of privacy and quiet but also in a great location for exploring so much of the island. We didn't spend much time at the house because we were out exploring but the time we did spend was exactly what we wanted. The views are amazing and the cottage and property are very well kept. We loved picking fresh fruit from the orchard in the morning for our breakfast and Paula and Dan were great hosts. If you're into hiking there's no better place than Waipio Valley and you can walk there from your front door. We did this on our first full day and were lucky enough to see wild horses on the beach. It was an amazing trip from start to finish!"

"Absolutely amazing home, property and owner. Eight members of my family (ages 21 to 78) just returned from spending 7 days on the Big Island and stayed in Hale 'Io (the house and property) for the entire week. This area of the Big Island is breathtaking, and Hale 'Io even more so. From the time we first made our way down the driveway to our very last view of the ocean and cliffs as we were leaving, we all lived in a perpetual state of awe and wonder.
This was our second trip to the Big Island and we did some sightseeing that we hadn't been able to squeeze in the first time, but Hale 'Io was what made this trip special and the most memorable. As all reviewers have mentioned, the views are breathtaking and the home is simply perfect. The area feels secluded (in a very good way) but is close enough to Honokaa (6 miles) for groceries, dining (don't miss the acai bowls at Hina Rae's Cafe!), a little shopping, etc. ... and the Island's other "must experience" activities are not difficult to get to by car (and the scenery is beautiful). The locals are very friendly and helpful.
Eileen, the home's owner, went out of her way to make us feel welcome from the moment we first walked in the door. The home was open and welcoming, exquisitely decorated, and perfectly stocked for cooking and eating in-home. We had the pleasure of visiting with Eileen for a bit while we were there; she is a warm and lively person with a great sense of humor.
My family has been on some great vacations, but we all agreed that hands-down, this was the best ... and all because of Hale 'Io. We spent a lot of our time just hanging out together on the outside patio, which is such a plus for us since we are all kind of scattered about. Another bonus: If you are in good physical shape, you can get a great daily workout hiking from the Waipio Valley Lookout (about 1/4 mile away) down to a black sand beach, and then back up.
My family has never wanted to stay in the same place twice, but we are all already working on dates we can return to the paradise that is Hale 'Io."
