"After returning home from a much needed vacation to the Big Island, we continue to reflect fondly on our wonderful stay at Don & Susan's rental home. We have rented many different homes on Homeaway and VRBO in Hawaii and elsewhere and have learned to depend heavily on other visitors' review comments, especially for longer stays. The great reviews this home had online caught our attention and the guestbook at the home with many more outstanding reviews made us confident we were in for a treat.
Since we were staying for 5 weeks this trip we wanted a place that would be comfortable, clean, relaxing, centrally located, conducive to working at home when needed, and spacious enough for visitors. Wow, this rental home exceeded all of our expectations! The construction of the home is very impressive and the spacious layout is just perfect for sharing with family or friends. What a perfect place to relax with family and enjoy the peaceful scenery by day and magnificent starry displays at night. Even the wet days were enjoyable as we watched the pastures and forests around blanketed with rain. We loved being within an hour of both Waimea and Hilo, and not too much further to Kona. Frequent photo trips to Waipio Valley and Laupahoehoe Point were just minutes away.
And to top it all off, we couldn't have asked for better hosts. Don & Susan are so pleasant and made us feel at home right from the start. Having lived there for decades, their recommendations took us to enjoyable places we hadn't yet experienced on other trips here. The periodic gifts of fruit, avocados, or jelly were great. And the little things like kindly offering to have our garbage taken to the transfer station, drinking water refilled, and linens washed really made a great stay even better. We had been accustomed to doing those things for ourselves in other rental homes on the Big Island but graciously accepted. Mahalo Don & Susan for a very memorable stay to our favorite vacation spot."

"My husband and I spent the last two nights of our 11 day trip to the Big Island here at the Hideaway. After driving down the long driveway and turning into the carport we were blown away by the view before us. Easily the best view on the island (or any island for that matter). The house itself was very comfortable and had everything we needed. We loved falling asleep to the sound of frogs, although earplugs did come in handy at one point as we slept with all the windows open. It was amazing to wake up early and just sit up in bed to see the view. The house is about 9 miles from town so while it's not too far it may be easier for some to get food and eat meals at the house. There is a fully equipped kitchen (although no microwave) that would make it convenient to prepare meals. We did that our second night and had a great time sitting in the yard and looking at the view while having dinner. The house is about 1/2 mile from the Waipio Valley lookout and it was a very easy walk to the lookout and then a not so easy (but definitely recommended) walk to the beach below.
In addition, we loved meeting Lani the dog. We were missing our two dogs at home and to have Lani come around often was a nice touch. She spent an entire afternoon hanging out with us in the yard and even fell asleep on the porch when we went to bed. When we awoke she was wagging her tail at the door about 2 minutes later. She is a super sweet dog who isn't a fan of bananas, but really loves malasadas and pizza crust. :-)
I would highly recommend this wonderful property!"

"There isn't much to add to the other reviews. I can simply say that this is heaven on Earth. We used the house for a family reunion. Two grandparents in their 70s, and two families with four kids all between 7 and 10. The house is ridiculously gorgeous. Amazing views abound. Easy drive to pristine white sand beaches within an hour. 4WD accessible black sand beach down the street. The town of Honokaa is 15 minutes away and has a great grocery store and a couple super little hole in the wall restaurants and shops. We mostly just stayed local because the house was so fantastic and we wanted to relax. The owner was very responsive via email as we prepared for the trip and stopped in on our first day to say hello. We felt like family, not renters. It took a night or two to get used to sleeping with windows open and no curtains, but in the end the frogs and breeze made for perfect evenings with the ideal morning alarm clock of sunrise waking me each day. Like I said, heaven on Earth. Can't beat pulling coconuts off the tree above the pool and cracking them open. Fresh fruit galore on the property. I miss it already."

Staying at Hamakua Green-house was an exceptional treat!
"Staying at Hamakua Green-house was an exceptional treat! The country setting surrounded by pastures with a view of the ocean from the covered porch was peaceful and relaxing. This clean, spacious off-the-grid house provided all the comforts of home from the open living rm, dining rm, and kitchen, to the comfortable beds in the roomy bedrms. We really enjoyed cooking in the well-equipped kitchen and grilling on the porch with awesome views. We also appreciated all the dry goods and supplies provided in the home, that you can’t load up your suitcase with when traveling among the islands. Within easy drives to the town of Hilo and many other places for sight seeing.
Some of our favs on the Big Island included: hikes to nearby Akaka Falls and the Waipio Valley with black sand beach, Hawaii Volcanoes Nat’l Park, scenic drive along Onomea Bay, watching surfers at Honoli ‘i Beach Park, Uncle Ed’s bakery, Woodshop Gallery & cafe, and shops in Honomu, dinners at Cafe Pesto and Ken’s House of Pancakes in Hilo, farmers mkt & Rainbow Jo’s shop in Hilo, Greenwell Coffee Farms tour & Annie’s Island Fresh Burgers in Kealakekua, snorkeling (went to Kahalu’u Beach Park-crowded & overused area, should have gone to Pu’uhonua O Honaunau or other location). There are many more places we wish we had had time to see, so a return visit would be wonderful!"
