  • Most Memorable place stayed on Big Island

"We spent a month on the Big Island and stayed in many different places. On the dry side we stayed in Waikoloa resort hotels and condos and then a nice hotel in Kona before we went over to the other side to a hotel in Hilo and finally ended up on the Hamakua Coast at The Historic Buddhist Temple. We were booked for 5 nights and when we first arrived felt unsure and wondered what we would do there for so long. Then the place began to work it's magic. We slowed down and began to really appreciate the quality of the space we were in...the feel of its history, how it has been lovingly restored and decorated with lovely old things that I continued to discover each day we were there, the amazing professional kitchen, the temple upstairs so wonderful a space for yoga etc etc. We enjoyed walking down to the point, learning about its history and watching the spectacular waves. We could drive into a lovely town nearby for shopping, coffees, movies and there is a swimming pool in a little town that is even closer. Hilo and Waimea are both accessible. We enjoyed the farmers market in Waimea on Sat morning. Ron sells his gelato there. His gelato is not to be missed! Unique flavours, delicious and healthy. Another highlight was definitely the hosts. They are brave and positive souls that are working hard at doing what they love. So they were inspiring as well as being as knowledgeable and helpful without ever intruding on your space. They are also fun! In short our stay was most memorable because of the place and because of them. Check out Peters review for more details."

  • Wonderful Experience

"This is a wonderful little get away up in the green hills with a quaint lane and bridge. It is a great place to watch the birds in the yard and enjoy the flowers, but the best part is that you feel so cared for. Karin provides a wonderful personalized assortment of goodies for breakfast and snacks. There are fresh flowers everywhere (unless you are allergic). There is a wealth of cooking utensils, pots and pans. We enjoy cooking at home and this made it easy. The Cottage was one of the highlights of our trip to Hawaii. When we return we would want to stay here again."

  • Wonderful inland stay

"We wanted to try staying somewhere inland for the first time and we loved it. The cottage was comfortable and we loved feeding the pig. Such a lovely place. We walked a short distance up the road and visited the Hawaiian Vanilla Company (great vanilla shakes). We went to Honoka'a several times. Such a darling town. If you want to get away from it all, this is the place. My husband and I loved it."

  • Nirvana!

"Stayed at the Cliff House for 4 nights on our second stop during our 30th anniversary trip to the Big Island. I don't even know where to start. Everything about our stay was idyllic! I expected a rustic, simple cottage. The woodwork instead was just beautiful (what a ceiling!). The love and care that Kristan has put into every detail is quite evident - the art, the sculptures, the flowers - inside and out, just beautiful. The house is saturated in local culture. Books about the island and Hawaiian legend abound. And the view!!! Breathtaking, spectacular, awesome, amazing, holy - pick your favorite word and it still falls short. We really did feel like we were all alone in the Garden of Eden. Drinking wine on the lanai as the sun went down. Rocking on the swing in the garden. Simple delicious meals made in the well-equipped kitchen. Hot tubs watching the stars every night. Big comfortable bed with soft sheets and puffy pillows. I even loved the silky tropical curtains hanging from bamboo on the windows. Great road for jogging along the water too (don't be put off by the many friendly dogs who come out to say hi along the way). The house is minutes away from the Waipio Valley - a spectacular (but steep) hike down to a pristine black sand beach. You can also take a tour from the store just down the street. The quaint little town of Honokaa is just 10 minutes away with a few restaurants (Café Il Mondo was great for pizza and calzone. Also picked up a terrific CD of the local high school jazz band there!) Our very favorite beach was Hapuna Beach - gorgeous white sand beach great for swimming and snorkeling (drive to the left access area for shade and snorkeling). The restaurant at Hapuna Beach Prince resort was terrific for lunch. The beach at the Mauna Kea resort was also beautiful but the lot for public access fills up by around 8 am. The only other thing I can say is that I almost cried when we left. If you're looking for a romantic time with the one you love in paradise, look no further than the Cliff House."
