  • A peaceful, magical paradise

"My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights - a return visit from last year. Paula greeted us with a bottle of champagne and a bowl of tropical fruit from the garden; pineapple, avocado, star fruit, lilikoi, grapefruit, tangerines and guava. Paula and Dan are wonderful hosts - they were there if we needed them, yet gave us the privacy to feel like we were the only ones there. This property is spectacular! One night, we soaked in the tub on the deck while watching the milky way and shooting stars overhead, and a lightning storm over Maui. All we could hear were crickets and coqui frogs. Last year we stayed in the Studio, this year we stayed in the Cottage. Both are very comfortable with gorgeous views. The property is close enough to Honoka'a for shopping and dinner (check out Il Mondo's), and Waipi'o valley for a hike, but remote enough to relax. We will definitely be going back because it feels like home."

  • Nirvana!

"Stayed at the Cliff House for 4 nights on our second stop during our 30th anniversary trip to the Big Island. I don't even know where to start. Everything about our stay was idyllic! I expected a rustic, simple cottage. The woodwork instead was just beautiful (what a ceiling!). The love and care that Kristan has put into every detail is quite evident - the art, the sculptures, the flowers - inside and out, just beautiful. The house is saturated in local culture. Books about the island and Hawaiian legend abound. And the view!!! Breathtaking, spectacular, awesome, amazing, holy - pick your favorite word and it still falls short. We really did feel like we were all alone in the Garden of Eden. Drinking wine on the lanai as the sun went down. Rocking on the swing in the garden. Simple delicious meals made in the well-equipped kitchen. Hot tubs watching the stars every night. Big comfortable bed with soft sheets and puffy pillows. I even loved the silky tropical curtains hanging from bamboo on the windows. Great road for jogging along the water too (don't be put off by the many friendly dogs who come out to say hi along the way). The house is minutes away from the Waipio Valley - a spectacular (but steep) hike down to a pristine black sand beach. You can also take a tour from the store just down the street. The quaint little town of Honokaa is just 10 minutes away with a few restaurants (Café Il Mondo was great for pizza and calzone. Also picked up a terrific CD of the local high school jazz band there!) Our very favorite beach was Hapuna Beach - gorgeous white sand beach great for swimming and snorkeling (drive to the left access area for shade and snorkeling). The restaurant at Hapuna Beach Prince resort was terrific for lunch. The beach at the Mauna Kea resort was also beautiful but the lot for public access fills up by around 8 am. The only other thing I can say is that I almost cried when we left. If you're looking for a romantic time with the one you love in paradise, look no further than the Cliff House."

  • Paradise on earth--Really!!!

"The pictures just don't do justice to this cliffside retreat! Like some others, we arrived after dark to soft lights, Hawaiian music, and gentle breezes blowing through the house. As we explored the house, we were constantly in awe, and that was magnified in the light of day as we explored the rest of the property the next morning. Even in August, temperatures were always comfortable. In fact, a couple of mornings were in the low 50's! The pool and hot tub were wonderful for cooling off and warming up, depending on what you need. The pool looks small, but it offers plenty of deep water for divers, and the slide is a delight for the more adventurous! If you're looking for a retreat from today's hurry-scurry lifestyle, this is it. Or, if you want to explore the island in the daytime and retreat at night, it's still perfect. Waimea, Mauna Kea, and Kona are just an hour or so west, and Hilo and the Volcanoes park are an hour or so south. Even closer are the Waipio Valley and Honokaa. This "senior" made it on foot down to the Waipio Valley floor and back up. Spectacular black sand beach (also visible from the deck at the house), and we even saw a wild horse. The village of Honokaa is delightful--not a chain store in sight. And everyone is so friendly. Eileen is the perfect hostess. She's provided everything you might need for a large group or small. She's available if you need her, but otherwise leaves you alone to enjoy this gorgeous location. If, for any reason, you can't book this location now, be sure to put it on your bucket list. It truly is an experience you will never forget!"

  • BREATHTAKING!

"Don't read this if you're coming to use your new golf clubs, or plan to be seen with the elite at a five star resort. BUT, if you want to stay awhile in one of the world's most beautiful and private locations, don't miss the opportunity to come here. After you pass through electric gates and travel down the private lane, you'll pass grassy fields with several cows and a couple of horses belonging to the owner who lives in the only other home sequestered on this large property. You'll park your car in the garage containing a washer and dryer for your use and ascend a staircase that opens on a large deck with gorgeous views of the coast. We took all our meals on this deck and found it hard to leave. Entering the nicely decorated home you will find a number of surprises awaiting you; beautiful tropical flowers, tropical, fruit chocolate candy, Kona coffee beans, etc. The owner, Richard, is one of the most pleasant persons I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I could go on and on, but the two fingers I type with are growing tired. Give youself a real Hawaiian treat and come to this fantastic property. Robert Small"
