  • Perfect home with all you'll need

"Very friendly people and superb and accommodating hosts, Kepi and Jim have created a little Garden of Eden on their property. We were lodged in a building full of small personal touches and surrounded by a wonderful tropical garden. On to the 1 bd apt Honu 2, we were pleasantly surprised by the spacious and tasteful decor; it was simply beautiful! Our stay was amazingly relaxing, not to mention an incredible value... Downtown Hilo, and the farmers’ market, is only a 15 minute drive away, and the apartment is also conveniently located for visiting the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and exploring the southeastern area of the Big Island. Highly recommended!"

  • AMAZING!!!!!

"We had such an amazing time. Soooooo relaxing. I thanked the property owner for calling in the whales to play right in front of the house!!!! Three sets! And swimming next to sea turtles at the beach was awesome! It was even possible to get my boys away from their video games, given the fun to be had here. :). We wish we had another week! We will be back."

  • Hurrican Proof

"this is the second time we are staying at Lopakas Lodge, and it gets better every time. The stay was wonderful, and Bev, the host is even better. She has maintained the lodge so that it feels like a new place every time have rented. This recent stay had us worried about the structural integrity of the lodge during Hurricane Iselle. The lodge withstood the storm, and most importantly our 5 y.o. son slept right through the storm. The best part is Bev treated us like family and offered her house and provide us guidance on what steps we should take in case of a situation caused by the storm. e are very thankful that we were at the lodge during this event. We will definitely be back. Mahalo Bev!"

  • Beautiful private home

"Everything was exactly as pictured and expected, including the charming and authentic ofuro bath. The kitchen is nicely appointed. There are few "left-over" spices and such from previous guests, which is slightly unusual, so be sure to stock up on your fave items on the way in. I suggest going to the mega KTA store, which is pretty much across from the airport. The house is located about 15 minutes from Hilo town, in a nice residential neighborhood standing on a hill, far enough from neighbors to feel secluded and with an exceptional view. We didn't lack for anything, and the sounds of the many birds, the evening's coqui symphony, and the many geckos kept us thoroughly entertained. Cable channels are sparse, but there is a stack of movies and DVD player. Upstairs bedrooms (Queen beds) are comfy and airy with ceiling fans to cut the heat, the downstairs bedroom has two twins for the kids. Not sure what I'd do if I had small children, as sleeping them downstairs wouldn't be prudent, but it's a nice private hideaway for older kids. Furnishings were comfortable and plentiful. We do wish there had been an actual sofa to lounge on, which would have made visiting with guests more comfortable, but overall we were just fine. The pool is simply wonderful! Not overly chlorinated, the water is the perfect temperature to swim day or night (though it can feel a tad chilly in the evening and when it rains). Just big enough to swim "sprints", I was able to do my usual lap swimming, so so so happy! Overall this home is such a relaxing, beautiful, comfortable place to be we actually spent a lot of time hanging out instead of doing the mad dashes to everywhere else. Things not to miss: Poi balls on Saturdays on the road in from Hilo. 4-mile beach and Richardson's beach on Kamehameha St. where I had an intimate meeting with an enormous honu (sea turtle). The Saturday and Wednesday mega Farmer's Market in Hilo. Buy some of Wes's Menehune Jams -- they are amazing!!! The drive through Puna -- go down to the volcanic tide pools (bring your water slippahs or you will cut your feet up and don't forget snorkel gear!) Of the many visits to the islands, this may be the best. I haven't even left the island yet, and I'm already planning my next trip -- and I will be staying here!"

Hilo Travel Tips

Hilo Lodging for Big Island Relaxation

On the Island of Hawaii, you will find Big Island vacation rentals to suit you in the Hilo District. The quaint, historic city, dating back to 1100 AD, sits on the curve of Hilo Bay. It is a lush green area with an array of historic sites contained within the city. Once famous for sugar cane production, the falling market and two horrific tsunamis mean the area around your Hilo lodging choice is now a thriving and relaxed tourist location. Hilo condos are the best choices for independent travelers seeking to create unique vacation experiences.

Hilo Lodging for Volcanic Beauty All around You

The reason for Hawaii’s unique beauty is its volcanic make-up. Big Island vacation rentals are ideally situated to explore some of these natural wonders. One of the areas that best graphically demonstrates this is the Nanawale Forest Reserve where, centuries ago, a flow of lava hit a path of wet O’hia trees. The lava then cooled, leaving vertical, hollow tubes of lava where the trees once stood. Now from Hilo condos, hikers can walk the park to see these natural wonders. Also at the Reserve is Aimakapa Fish Pond, home to many rare birds, a habitat for local stilt and coot and a breeding ground for pied-billed grebe. Hilo lodging is an ideal location for bird-watching and taking in the sights of this area.

Hilo Condos for Relaxation and Rainforest Beauty

The uniqueness of Hawaii does not stop with the volcanic wonders on the doorstep of Big Island vacation rentals. Also exclusive to the Island is the USA’s only tropical Rainforest Zoo. The Pana’ewa Rainforest Zoo, close to Hilo condos, is home to over 60 animals including a rare white Bengal tiger. Getting back to nature is easy in your Hilo lodging choice.

Big Island Vacation Rentals Are in Beautiful Locations

Nature-lovers will also enjoy a visit to Nani Mau Gardens, close to most Hilo lodging choices. The garden boasts a collection of specimens of every flowering plant native to the Islands. It is also home to one of the world’s finest collections of orchids. These Big Island vacation rentals are ideal to visit Nani Mau, meaning “forever beautiful,” where you can appreciate how plants are a vital part of Hawaiian culture. One more visit for renters of Hilo condos will no doubt be the Imiloa Astronomy Center with its exhibits and shows about the culture, history and astronomy of this beautiful place.
