  • This is THE PLACE to stay!!!

"Why spend your Hawaii vacation in a cramped up hotel room and fighting the crowds, when you can take your whole family and spend your time at a private home with lots of room right on the ocean? This is the place to stay! We so much enjoyed our time and our stay here. The home has everything you need to feel at home. You can't beat having ocean front views from all of the bedrooms and letting the waves put you to sleep. And it is so nice to be able to swim in the pool or lounge in the hottub with the ocean just feet away. Even though it was the end of the whale season, we were able see one as he/she jumped out of the water. The location of the house allows you to be only 12 miles from Hilo, and not far drives north of Hilo to the waterfalls and scenic drives, and also a short drive to Volcanos National Park. While in the Puna district, you can drive the coastline for breathtaking views of the coast and beaches while you drive through the tropical forest. For something closer to the house, there are several bicycles that you can use and take a nice ride to the local shoreline parks and beaches. This house is really amazing and I promise you will love it too. Barbara and Jack will make sure you are right at home! Thank you Barbara and Jack for our wonderful stay. We will definitely be coming back here to stay!"

  • great stay

"Had a lovely 4 night stay here. The pool and hottub were great for lounging away the day, and the outdoor covered lanai was great for eating meals while enjoying the fresh ocean air."

  • Very nice place

"Hilo Hale is conveniently located about 10 minutes drive from downtown Hilo, and close to the KTA grocery store and Prince Kuhio mall. At the same time, it is set in a large garden in a quiet and safe neighbourhood. The house is spacious, clean and comfortable, as well as light and bright. With plenty of windows to open for a through breeze, the lack of air conditioning is not an issue. The kitchen is rather old-fashioned, but functional with the usual appliances in good working order. No oven and no dishwasher is a bit of a shame in an otherwise well equipped house, but with a toaster oven and the huge old porcelain sink we did fine. The cookware was good and there were a few staples waiting for us, but surprisingly no foil, plastic wrap, or ziplock bags. Washer and dryer are fine, although located outside and under the kitchen in a very low-ceilinged space where anyone over 5’2 would have to stoop. Laundry detergent was supplied, but nothing else. It was lovely to have a bathtub, not only a shower, in a nice bathroom. The one bathroom was enough for the two of us, but for four people there could be a bit of a traffic jam. The location is an excellent base for trips to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, to Pahoa and Puna, to the string of beaches along Kalanianaole Avenue, to the Hamakua coast, and is also quite handy to the new Saddle Road."

  • Repeat stay - Great the second time, too!

"For our previous stay in the house - there were 6 people, and this time it turned out to be just us two! So the big house seemed even bigger than when we used all the bedrooms. The house is equipped with a good variety of cooking utensils, coffee maker, rice cooker, and plenty of serving items. We would love to rent it again - and bring the whole family along! We came again in February for the second time, so the lack of air conditioner was not an issue - however, each room has a ceiling fan, and the house can be opened on either side to move air through. It was very comfortable for us. People with disabilities can use the first floor - and my husband, recovering from hip surgery this trip, did just great because there were no obstacles between the bedrooms, walk in shower, and wide hallways to the kitchen and living areas!"
