  • Very comfortable and quiet

"We had a wonderful stay in this beautiful house that is right in the heart of Hilo. We were amazed at how quiet it was because we were just a few minutes from downtown on a fairly busy street. Amazed that we didn't need the air conditioning, open windows provided wonderful cross breeze. We have stayed in many vacation rentals and this is the best stocked kitchen we have seen to date. Absolutely everything we needed was at our finger tips. Beds and furniture were very comfortable. We would like to see just a few more soaps and paper products supplied, otherwise it was perfect. Any questions or issues were addressed right away. would recommend this house to everyone and will most likely try to rent it again on our next trek to the Big Island."

  • This is my idea of Paradise!

"The road to the property is reminiscent of old Hawaii with canopies of trees and gently flowing streams that give way to an open clearing where this home is located. Only a few minutes from Hilo but you feel a million miles away from everything. The ocean view greeted us as we excitedly entered the house to the sound of Hawaiian music they had left on for us. The house had every comfort you could ask for and my kids particularly enjoyed the closet full of toys and foosball table on the back patio. At night, the sound of rain lightly tapping on the sky lights was relaxing and made for a good night's sleep. On our second morning, some cows were grazing just over the fence from the backyard and my wife and kids had a ball taking pictures with them. My only regret was that we didn't get more than two nights here as we had stayed at several places on the island. Next time I'm on the big island I will spend more days on the Hilo side enjoying the beauty and laid back pace, and this house will be at the top of my list for places to stay! Linda was a great host and called to make sure we had everything we needed. When we left, my wife had forgotten an article of clothing and she was kind enough to mail it out to us. That tells me Linda will go the extra mile to make sure your vacation is special! Thank you!"

  • Very nice place

"Hilo Hale is conveniently located about 10 minutes drive from downtown Hilo, and close to the KTA grocery store and Prince Kuhio mall. At the same time, it is set in a large garden in a quiet and safe neighbourhood. The house is spacious, clean and comfortable, as well as light and bright. With plenty of windows to open for a through breeze, the lack of air conditioning is not an issue. The kitchen is rather old-fashioned, but functional with the usual appliances in good working order. No oven and no dishwasher is a bit of a shame in an otherwise well equipped house, but with a toaster oven and the huge old porcelain sink we did fine. The cookware was good and there were a few staples waiting for us, but surprisingly no foil, plastic wrap, or ziplock bags. Washer and dryer are fine, although located outside and under the kitchen in a very low-ceilinged space where anyone over 5’2 would have to stoop. Laundry detergent was supplied, but nothing else. It was lovely to have a bathtub, not only a shower, in a nice bathroom. The one bathroom was enough for the two of us, but for four people there could be a bit of a traffic jam. The location is an excellent base for trips to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, to Pahoa and Puna, to the string of beaches along Kalanianaole Avenue, to the Hamakua coast, and is also quite handy to the new Saddle Road."

  • So beautiful and a great place to relax.

"Wow, this was a nice place! This has to be one of the most unique properties with VRBO. Having a very nice cottage with a scenic view of a pasture and trees, a splendid view of the ocean, their own waterfall (and bench to sit and watch), creek with banana trees, pool and hot tub, exotic rambutan fruit in season, and the most personable and helpful hosts, Keala and Steve, one couldn't ask for any place better in order to relax and use as a base of travel. We were so glad that we chose the Hilo area rather than the western side of the island. Hawai'i is small enough that we circled the island during our stay in addition to cutting thru the Saddle Road (Hwy 200) in the center. We enjoyed the variety of inexpensive Thai (fell in love with the food!), Vietnamese, and Japanese restaurants in Hilo. There are many traditional ones there, too. Sights close by include waterfalls, the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, a black sand beach (Richardson's Beach Park), and Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Above all, be sure to schedule some time just to sit and relax at the cottage. We sure hope to come back one day!"
