  • Great location.

"Lovely condo, excellent location for a few days as a base of operations to explore the south end of the big island. 25 miles from South Point and green sand beaches, 25 miles from Volcanoes national park and right on Punalu'u black sand beach. Beautiful views off the lanai of the golf course and the ocean. Breakfast on the lanai with visits by brightly colored tropical birds each morning, great way to start your day. You can't beat this for the price. The only negative would be the pest control, the giant spider in the kitchen when we arrived and a little brown gecko (we named him Edgar) who came to watch TV with us each night in the living room. They did come and spray the day we were leaving so hopefully that took care of the spider, but hey, it's the tropics you've got to expect SOME houseguests."

  • comfy & convenient

"if you visiting the ka'u district you should book a room here. it's perfectly located between punaluu, whittington and south point. and it directly hana hou restaurant - a great place to get all three meals. the folks are friendly and welcoming and the food is delicious. i stayed here over thanksgiving weekend and enjoyed their traditional thanksgiving day buffet. the apple pie is out of this world! i also enjoyed that i could call in my meal order from my room and then walk around front to the restaurant to pick it up and take it back to my room to eat. my room had all the amenities. it wasnt fancy but it was clean, comfy, convenient and very affordable for a budget-minded traveler. i would definitely stay here again!"

  • Perfect for us

"We felt this was exactly what we saw in the pictures inside and out. Loved the sunrises from the lanai, and was a good home away from home to kick off and unwind before and after our many hiking and snorkeling adventures up both the east and west side of the island. We are a family of four and it gave us some space to spread out and fun places to hang together."

  • Lava House a unique experience

"If one seeks something different than the humidity, crowds and traffic of the Kiluea-Kona strip, then Ocean View may be right for you. Ocean View is a somewhat off-the-beaten-path community that is both economically and culturally more diverse than the tourist homogeneity of Kona. Lava House (in Ocean View) sits about 3,000 feet up the side of Mauna Loa, smack on the 1907 lava flow, in a unique and nicely landscaped setting. Being at that elevation means that it has outstanding views from the huge decks, but also that it can be cool adn breezy. Bring your sweaters for the evenings, and perhaps enjoy a warming fire on the cooler nights. The living room is big enough for a square dance! Lava House is very well kept, has large bedrooms, clean fully stocked bathrooms and a very large fully stocked kitchen, including coffee maker, toaster, blender, dish washer, etc. It has an especially nice kitchen with acres of counter space which is important because Ocean View does not have many quality dining options, so cooking-in is suggested (by me). In that regard I would suggest doing as much shopping as possible in Kona as the stores in Ocean View are pretty rudimentary to my taste anyway. This goes double for protein items like chicken, fish and any thing that might be more than entry level in other Dept's. (I would also encourage one to travel with their own Chef's knife if checking baggage. The knives at most any rental can be marginal, and make cooking miserable. As a geologist I work all over the world and travel with a cheap, $30ish bucks Victorinox 'Swiss Army brand' Fibrox Chef's knife which is excellent, rated better than the ones tens time as expensive and a terrific bargain.) Lava House has a very nice surround-sound audio system, and currently it plays cd's. So if you have your music on a phone or iPod, it may not interface with the existing sound system (we couldn't figure it out anyway). There is a ancient outdoor grill that is on it's last legs, so you may want to contact the owner about any updates there. In summary it is a well kept, very functional and large house in a unique setting."
