  • Great for Glamping!

"We really enjoyed the uniqueness of Yurt in the Sky. We were there only one night and it provided the perfect stay for a night on the Big Island. We wish we could have stayed longer. The yurt was about an hour from the Volcanoes Park, which wasn't a big deal for us. We actually headed out there 3 times in the day were there. It is definitely best if you consider this fancy camping. If you have any allergies to dust, be sure to take a Claritin before you go, 3 of our party had allergy issues, which may have been cleared up by a bit of airing of the yurt. There were spider webs on the doors and sky light but a quick swish with the broom cleared those right up. Also, it gets very chilly way up there. Unfortunately, we did not try to turn on the propane fireplace until very late in the evening. We were unable to get it working, and really did not want to bother anyone so late. Instead, we all bundled up and cuddled. The kitchen had lots of lovely spices and bits and bobs to help round out meals. We moved the propane stove onto the porch for cooking with no problem. We also found a few handy solar lamps to carry around at night. We kind of loved the neighborhood and looking at the stars. My husband kept looking at realty signs trying to convince me we should just buy a lot :) We would definitely recommend a visit, if laid back is your style. Communication with the owner was quick and easy and we were supplied with great tips and info on the yurt prior to our arrival."

  • Top notch in every way!

"From greeting us outside with a flashlight in the midst of a heavy rain (it gets VERY dark in the valley at night), David and Anne were the perfect hosts. They provided pages of suggestions on places to visit (and lists of their favorite restaurants) which we continued to use throughout our stay on Hawai'i. The location in Wood Valley is stunning and serene; the grounds smell amazing--fresh flowering plants everywhere; the cottage is even better than the photos. We will dream about it until we have an opportunity to return!"

  • Enjoyable cottage, but can be rustic.

"This is a unique house. There are a lot of pluses, but also a few rough edges. I want to give a straight forward review to make sure future renters have clear expectations. First of all, the house is very remotely located. We found the solitude to be quite enjoyable. It is about 30-45 minutes away from the Volcanos National Park. There nearest small town, Pahala, is about 5-7 minute drive. The town has limited services. It's a very relaxing and very quiet area. However, because of the remote location, there will be little to no cell phone service. The owner provides internet wi-fi. The area tends to get light rain. The elevation of the area is 2000+ feet, so the days in mid-January were very nice and could get a little hot. Because of the elevation, the nights can get very crisp, around 50-60 degrees. The house has an "open air" floor plan, so it does not have central air or heat and is not well insulated, so bring some warm clothes…it will be chilly! Because of the lack of insulation, we found a lot of spiders throughout the house. Keep in mind there is only one small bathroom for all five bedrooms and the only shower is the outdoor shower. The outdoor shower has a romantic flair to it, but by the end of our stay, we were longing for a traditional bathroom. The grounds are very beautiful and peaceful, only one or two cars passed the house during our 4-day stay. We did not meet the owner, but she was congenial over the phone. As another reviewer mentioned, we also had a late night trespasser that left us wondering who could have visited during the middle of the night. With that said, the house has some very charming and old-fashioned traits about it and wouldn't dissuade future renters from staying, just keep in mind it is a bit rustic."

  • Good place to crash after exploring the southern side of the Big Island.

"Title says it all. There are two cabins behind the Hana Hou Restaurant in Naalehu, which are great places to crash after snorkeling, Punalu'u black sand beach, and Volcano National Park. Breakfast is quite tasty at Hana Hou so plan accordingly."
