"The house is spacious, airy, bright and exceptional in all respects. The house is secluded: there are neighbors but nothing close by to be seen or heard. There is all one needs for all occasions. The kitchen is very well appointed with all the needed utensils; however, if one is doing serious chef work, pack a quality knife. The breeze and views are WONDERFUL from the wrap-around porch! Though on a catchment system - and we were mindful of this - our six members never had a water problem. Joanne has a large selection of beach/water items on the lower porch including a kayak; however, I recommend you either pack snorkel items or stop at a Walmart (I just HATE recommending Walmart!) and purchase on your way in. You WILL want to snorkel! The following is recommendations/information about the area. (no reflection on the exceptional house)
~ The Oceanview market at the base of the hill is a full line grocery that stays open until 9 p.m. The prices seemed in line with other places on the island
~ The house is a substantial distance from most everything. You will drive a lot. Gas is about one USD higher than mainland. Thus, plan your day linear and one can accomplish a lot.
~ Joanne and guest have provided/left guide books about the island. Use them for they will save you a lot of time.
~ Pack a sweater and an umbrella!
~ Be sure to drive across the saddle road. Despite what some of the guidebooks read, this is a very nice modern highway (not just a "road").
~ Seek out the local restaurants and roadside "shacks". You will be rewarded.
~ Stop and pick the fruit along the roadside. Stop at roadside fruit stands and buy the local stuff. Be prepared for all future like and similar fruits on the mainland to be a huge disappointment.
~ Snorkel at the tide pools and Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park. An experience you will never regret and will forever change your life. Humbling.
Wondrous place, exceptional host and house. Make a dream come true."

"I love fireplaces, and living on Oahu you don't get opportunities to use them. The chilly nights that high up were no problem with the fire and cozy bed. Sunrise in the yurt was beautiful, the whole thing was bathed in white light and slowly warmed with the sun. It's close to Volcano National Park, the black sand beach (Punaluu), South Point and a lot of other beautiful spots on the southern half of the island. The owner is very accessible and super helpful if you're having any issues. If you're a "less is more" type of person and you like simple living, then this is your place."

"Turtle Hut II was the perfect home away from home. Mom enjoyed reading her book on the lanai each morning while the kids and I strolled down to the beach to swim with the sea turtles. We were all entertained by the birds and geckos that visited us each day on the lanai as well. We had a beautiful view from the pool and spa where we relaxed most evenings during our stay. The condo was very clean and comfortable with everything you could need. If you have the good fortune of staying at Turtle Hut II just know that you will not have the convenience of a grocery store or gas station near by. My family took this as a good excuse to visit Hilo, although there are some smaller towns about 20-30 minutes away. Turtle Hut was only 30 minutes from the volcanoes national park, which was one of our main destinations. This was an awesome vacation truly enjoyed by the whole family. Thanks Barbara!"

"We are shortly returned from our stay in this lovely condo - what a perfect spot! I have been coming to Hawaii - and Colony One, where this condo is located - for years. So far, this unit is my favorite condo there. Renting a condo is always a gamble - you never know what you're going to get - but this place was clean, roomy, and charming, with lots of local island touches. We cooked most of our own meals during our stay, so we appreciated the fully-stocked kitchen and the barbecue area by the pool, where we spent several hours grilling and making friends with other visitors.
The location can't be beat - nearby beaches and Volcano National Park are both an easy drive away, and must-sees like Pt of Refuge, Hilo, and the Kona waterfront all make great day trips. If you want to stay close to home, you can visit the gorgeous black sand beach, swim in the pool (and hot tub set in volcanic rock), golf, or take one of the many nearby hikes and beaches. This is also an amazing spot for sea turtles - we saw nine during 30-40 minutes snorkeling in the water right off the black sand beach! I highly recommend this place for a quiet getaway or any adventurous souls looking to explore the Big Island!"
