  • Excellent place, good environment, interesting location.

"I don't like to write reviews. It is simply because most things are not worth my time writing about. However, I feel compelled to write about this place. This is a wonderful place. The apartment has many amenities that you will not find anywhere else. Plus it is really clean and owners are super helpful. The environment is nice. It is close to the black beach. I always tried to walk there in the afternoon to enjoy the nice view. However, the location is very interesting. If you are looking for convenience and close to city, then this is not for you and the owners warned me about it ahead. The closest supermarket is 1.5 hours away. Kona, which has many nice beaches, is 2.5 hours away. However, the volcano is only 30 minutes away, which is very nice. If you are looking for adventure, this is the place for you. There is no shortage of places to go to have fun. So, do consider that before booking. However, with that being said, I had a great time and you will most likely like this too. PS: You will need a car, trust me."

  • Great for Glamping!

"We really enjoyed the uniqueness of Yurt in the Sky. We were there only one night and it provided the perfect stay for a night on the Big Island. We wish we could have stayed longer. The yurt was about an hour from the Volcanoes Park, which wasn't a big deal for us. We actually headed out there 3 times in the day were there. It is definitely best if you consider this fancy camping. If you have any allergies to dust, be sure to take a Claritin before you go, 3 of our party had allergy issues, which may have been cleared up by a bit of airing of the yurt. There were spider webs on the doors and sky light but a quick swish with the broom cleared those right up. Also, it gets very chilly way up there. Unfortunately, we did not try to turn on the propane fireplace until very late in the evening. We were unable to get it working, and really did not want to bother anyone so late. Instead, we all bundled up and cuddled. The kitchen had lots of lovely spices and bits and bobs to help round out meals. We moved the propane stove onto the porch for cooking with no problem. We also found a few handy solar lamps to carry around at night. We kind of loved the neighborhood and looking at the stars. My husband kept looking at realty signs trying to convince me we should just buy a lot :) We would definitely recommend a visit, if laid back is your style. Communication with the owner was quick and easy and we were supplied with great tips and info on the yurt prior to our arrival."

  • Great place to geet away from the noise of the city

"Awesome location between Hilo and Kona, so you can enjoy the whole island. Only an 1.5 hours to Hilo instead of 3hrs from Kona. 1 hour from the volcano park. very clean and a large space to live in, large patio windows, full kitchen was great to use. Communication with owner was professional and prompt, answered all questions. It was like a home away from home really. Everything we needed was available. the local area is an old lava flow so If you like hiking and bizarre rock formations, you can wet your appetite right from the back yard. We loved it. there is a grocery store, gas station, pizza shops, bbq food, breakfast place all nearby just off the main highway (about 4 miles away). if you like Hiking I highly recommend volcano national park to start. there is a ton of other places to hike. also Snorkeling is good at black sand beach, scuba dive in Kona (Big island divers is the best- DO THE MANTA DIVE) as Hilo is not as good (visibility)."

  • Enjoyable cottage, but can be rustic.

"This is a unique house. There are a lot of pluses, but also a few rough edges. I want to give a straight forward review to make sure future renters have clear expectations. First of all, the house is very remotely located. We found the solitude to be quite enjoyable. It is about 30-45 minutes away from the Volcanos National Park. There nearest small town, Pahala, is about 5-7 minute drive. The town has limited services. It's a very relaxing and very quiet area. However, because of the remote location, there will be little to no cell phone service. The owner provides internet wi-fi. The area tends to get light rain. The elevation of the area is 2000+ feet, so the days in mid-January were very nice and could get a little hot. Because of the elevation, the nights can get very crisp, around 50-60 degrees. The house has an "open air" floor plan, so it does not have central air or heat and is not well insulated, so bring some warm clothes…it will be chilly! Because of the lack of insulation, we found a lot of spiders throughout the house. Keep in mind there is only one small bathroom for all five bedrooms and the only shower is the outdoor shower. The outdoor shower has a romantic flair to it, but by the end of our stay, we were longing for a traditional bathroom. The grounds are very beautiful and peaceful, only one or two cars passed the house during our 4-day stay. We did not meet the owner, but she was congenial over the phone. As another reviewer mentioned, we also had a late night trespasser that left us wondering who could have visited during the middle of the night. With that said, the house has some very charming and old-fashioned traits about it and wouldn't dissuade future renters from staying, just keep in mind it is a bit rustic."
