  • Best Retreat Ever

"Hale Aloha Aina is the perfect away-from-it-all location for a romantic retreat. The cottage and grounds are immaculate, furnishings understated and comfortable, and the hosts have thought of nearly everything to make your stay perfect. From fragrant flowers and fresh fruit on arrival to well-chosen kitchen supplies, ice chests, snorkel and beach equipment, to the caring and competent caretaker, groundsman and housekeeper, Hale Aloha Aina is perfect. Worth noting, we safely and comfortably rode out 12" of rain over 15 hours while Hurricane Ana raged off the coast of the Big Island. We felt secure and well-cared for with the generator and solar power, frequent communication with the caretaker who lives across the road, and with the property owners by telephone. The house was warm and dry, we never lost power, and when the water line broke due to the storm, the county was in frequent touch until the line was repaired. It took less than 24 hours. You will not want to leave Hale Aloha Aina, so make sure you stay long enough to really enjoy the peace and serenity and lovely surroundings of Wood Valley."

  • Gorgeous house with very private and quiet location!

"We stayed here from May25, 2014 until June 30, 2014 while we were looking for a long term rental, and thoroughly enjoyed this home. It is so beautiful and we especially loved the kitchen, the vaulted wood beam ceilings, and glass door stand up showers. Very nice breeze throughout the day and night with the windows open. Had everything we needed and we were very comfortable there. Raul was easy to work with and very hospitable to us and made it an easy stay. If you want to explore the south part of the island, then this is the place to be. It is on the south tip and you can go east or west to Hilo or Kona. It is near South Point green sand beaches which is awesome. Volcano National Park isn't too far either. Ka'u has the macadamia nut and Ka'u coffee tasting that is pretty cool too. There is a pretty cool view of the ocean on clear days so you still feel and remember that you are in Hawaii. Huge lanai that is comfortable and keeps you dry when it is raining. We used the yoga mats and exercised on the lanai everyday with 5 of us, so it is very big! Thanks again Raul for allowing us to stay in your home and we hope others will find this review useful as well. Semper Fi brother and God bless!"

  • Family of five

"Our family of five arrived very tired and were overjoyed to find a house clean and welcoming to us. The grounds were beautiful, lots of trees and flowers. Everything we needed except perishables was provided. The owner contacted us before we went there and was very friendly and helpful. Shirley, the caretaker, had everything ready for us, what a fun person. We would love to vacation there again."

  • A thoroughly enjoyable rental experience

"We (two couples) stayed at this rental home for one full week and found it a great retreat from the hustle and bustle of towns we could have chosen. Its location close to the southern tip gave us easy access to either side of the Big Island and we could plan accordingly, not having to retrace driving miles, making this a time saver for us. The quiet and solitude of the lava fields were unique and serene, the 360 degree clear view of the area enjoyable, giving us a sense of weather for each day, and making us feel like we were in our own little corner of the world. We liked its proximity to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in particular as we visited that several times. It was a pleasant drive from there on into Hilo where we visited the Hawaii Tropical Botanic Garden, a plant enthusiast must, and had a great dinner at Cafe Pesto on the bay. We were able to combine a trip to the Punalu'u Black Sand Beach with one of our visits to the Volcanoes park on one day. Another day we drove easily from the house to Pu'uhonua O Honaunau Historic Park south of Kona which was a short drive or walk from Two Step beach, a great place for beginner snorkelers. I liked that we could take a quick drive from the house to the small Ocean View market right on Highway 11 for groceries, although we found cheaper gas right around the corner at Kahuku Country Market. People were friendly and helpful at both places. The drive to drop off our trash and get drinking water took planning, but there was always something to look at along the way. Had we wanted to cook a gourmet meal the house's kitchen and all of its counter space, utensils, pans, and convenience would have made that easy. One couple enjoyed the hot tub several nights and there was room for all of us to spread out in the evenings and unload cameras or plot out the next day's adventures, with windows open and overhead fans to keep us cool. It was great not to have the humidity at the house we experienced in the Kona area. The little Gold Dust geckos that lived in the lanai area were like little colorful mascots. Mark was very helpful by phone with a couple of simple problems we had when we first got there. Mark and Jo Dean provided clear written instructions about the house and the renting process. The place was spotless, beautiful, and comfortable. All four of us enjoyed staying there and we would do so again."
