  • In a Word: Magic

"Opened my eyes each morning to a beautiful sunrise greeting us while still lying in bed. Made great local coffee and sat in the living room to take in the spectacular view before chatting with Bill and Darlene to plan our day. However, it was always hard to leave the Hobbit House since it enveloped us in a world of fantasy: a "floating" tub overlooking the view through gorgeous stained glass windows, a large walk-in shower with floor to ceiling glass, branches strung with tiny lights hanging from the wood ceiling, beautifully handcrafted wood throughout, little hidden surprises if you take the time to look, and most importantly, Bill and Darlene! They both add so much to the experience because they took the risk to create a life truly their own and are so willing to share it with you. They are two of the most creative, passionate and interesting people you will meet. They are also very warm, welcoming hosts who will make you feel at home. Now, the ride up the hill is a bit challenging the first time, but no need for a 4x4. The property is in a secluded area and off the grid, but all this adds to a sense of adventure! It is in a great location for exploring the fantastic Volcanos Nat Park, black (head further back to see the lovely pond with water lilies) and green sand beaches, stunning Hamakua Coast, snorkeling beaches, spiritually strong City of Refuge, South Point and more. Don't forget to take advantage of the opportunity to slow down and simply chat with those in the area. If you're not looking for a typical tourist trip, you can't go wrong. It's the kind of travel experience that will stay with you in surprising ways. All our best to Darlene and Bill!"

  • Enjoyable cottage, but can be rustic.

"This is a unique house. There are a lot of pluses, but also a few rough edges. I want to give a straight forward review to make sure future renters have clear expectations. First of all, the house is very remotely located. We found the solitude to be quite enjoyable. It is about 30-45 minutes away from the Volcanos National Park. There nearest small town, Pahala, is about 5-7 minute drive. The town has limited services. It's a very relaxing and very quiet area. However, because of the remote location, there will be little to no cell phone service. The owner provides internet wi-fi. The area tends to get light rain. The elevation of the area is 2000+ feet, so the days in mid-January were very nice and could get a little hot. Because of the elevation, the nights can get very crisp, around 50-60 degrees. The house has an "open air" floor plan, so it does not have central air or heat and is not well insulated, so bring some warm clothes…it will be chilly! Because of the lack of insulation, we found a lot of spiders throughout the house. Keep in mind there is only one small bathroom for all five bedrooms and the only shower is the outdoor shower. The outdoor shower has a romantic flair to it, but by the end of our stay, we were longing for a traditional bathroom. The grounds are very beautiful and peaceful, only one or two cars passed the house during our 4-day stay. We did not meet the owner, but she was congenial over the phone. As another reviewer mentioned, we also had a late night trespasser that left us wondering who could have visited during the middle of the night. With that said, the house has some very charming and old-fashioned traits about it and wouldn't dissuade future renters from staying, just keep in mind it is a bit rustic."

  • Gorgeous house with very private and quiet location!

"We stayed here from May25, 2014 until June 30, 2014 while we were looking for a long term rental, and thoroughly enjoyed this home. It is so beautiful and we especially loved the kitchen, the vaulted wood beam ceilings, and glass door stand up showers. Very nice breeze throughout the day and night with the windows open. Had everything we needed and we were very comfortable there. Raul was easy to work with and very hospitable to us and made it an easy stay. If you want to explore the south part of the island, then this is the place to be. It is on the south tip and you can go east or west to Hilo or Kona. It is near South Point green sand beaches which is awesome. Volcano National Park isn't too far either. Ka'u has the macadamia nut and Ka'u coffee tasting that is pretty cool too. There is a pretty cool view of the ocean on clear days so you still feel and remember that you are in Hawaii. Huge lanai that is comfortable and keeps you dry when it is raining. We used the yoga mats and exercised on the lanai everyday with 5 of us, so it is very big! Thanks again Raul for allowing us to stay in your home and we hope others will find this review useful as well. Semper Fi brother and God bless!"

  • Together Time

"My wife and I celebrated our 15th anniversary last week at Hale Aloha Aina and had some great together time alone and secluded. It's hard to think of Hawaii as cool nights in a heavily wooded mountain area but that's what this is and was to our delight. Clean, comfortable and secluded - a genuine and unique big island experience. I highly commend this rental to all seeking the same."
