"This is a beautiful home that is well maintained with 3 nice size bedrooms, large showers, and big porch. It was great for our large family of 7. Owner was very easy to work with and got in touch with us quickly. Nice quiet setting between Kona and Hilo. Close to green sand beach and not too far from Hawaii Volcano National Park. We had a great vacation."

"Having never visited the island before, the location was intimidating but easy to find with the maps app on my phone. That same remote location makes this house perfect for a relaxed getaway on the Big Island. The house is 3000 feet up Mauna Loa, so the days are warm'ish and nights are perfectly cool, no a/c needed here! Coming from a metropolitan area, the quietness, tranquility, and incredibly dark skies were the best features of this house. Located roughly half way between Kona and Volcanoes National Park, it's the perfect base camp for exciting day trips. Remember, the Big Island is big so you will still drive a good distance to any attractions. The generously stocked kitchen, guide books, and outdoor grill were very nice surprises. The house was spotless, and very well supplied, the owner obviously takes a lot of pride in this property.
Advice for potential renters: don't be afraid of the location, it's completely worth the effort to get here; stock up on food in Kona or Hilo, there is supermarket in Ocean View, but the prices are very high; take time to go for a walk in the neighborhood and enjoy the exotic plant life, lava field, and the peace and quiet."

"This was our fourth stay at Sea Mountain Colony One; different unit each time. This unit was by far the nicest. It is well supplied with everything one might need (except mustard, but thatʻs another story}. Everything inside is tasteful and good quality. It has its own wifi, which is miles better than the general Colony One wifi. The owner is pleasant and accommodating. In the information binder, we even found song sheets for Hawaiian music by a legendary Hawaiian musician, Bill Tapia. We knew Bill late in his 103-year life. A large watercolor in the living room reminded me a lot of ones my father painted. It felt like home.
Note on Colony One: Of the lodgings available in Ka`u, this is the best value. Come here if you are interested in Hawaiian history, culture, lifestyle -- not if you are looking for luxury. And of course, the Punalu`u black sand beach and Volcano National Park are attractions. Each unit in Colony One is privately owned, so they are inconsistent. Also, the resident manager is no help. If something in the unit needs attention, the resident manager will tell you to call somebody else, but cannot give you a name or number. If somehow you should lock yourself out, the resident manager will charge $100 to let you back in. So do not expect service of any kind."
