"We spent a week with 3 adults and 2 teenage boys. The bungalow has a rustic but cool feel to it. The island has been experiencing high surf and has remodeled the beach. It is more rocky but its's easy access for kayaks and paddle boards. We planned on snorkeling but with the churned up waters we did a lot more kayaking and body boarding. There were many experienced surfers right out our door. We were thoroughly entertained. On calmer days we were able to kayak out far and get a close up of migrating whales and manta rays. Because of the close proximity of the ocean and rocky cliffs and high surf the noise was unbelievable at night, the bedroom windows on the ocean side do not have shutters to dull the noise. I do recommend considering this for future renters. The teen age boys had a trip of a life time. The kitchen is well equipped for home cooking. Leilani the property manager was very helpful and we rented kayaks and paddle boards from the company she suggested. They were very reliable and easy to contact. We plan to go back next year."

"This house is very charming and the location is AMAZING! Steps to the beach! We stayed here as a family of 4 (2 adults, 11 year old and 14 year old) for 9 days. The house was very clean and had everything we needed including beach chairs, coolers, etc. The kitchen was fully equipped. We were here mid July - no AC - but, the breeze off the ocean was almost always enough air for us. The bathrooms could use updating but certainly weren't spending our time in the bathroom! When the guys would go diving, it was very safe and very easy for my daughter and I to just hang out on the beach and in the house. When our teenage son decided he would be lazy, he just stayed in the house and we were steps away loving the beach and water. We enjoyed the open concept kitchen and living area as a family and loved the lanai for meals and just relaxing. The location in Puako is amazing and the sandy beach was pretty quiet (on our end in front of the house) even though it is a public beach. Snorkeling and swimming, stand up paddle boarding were great right off the beach. The outdoor shower was a great feature, too. Parking, a clothes line for scuba stuff and towels, the list goes on with the details to make our life easy. I am a total snob about accommodations and I was in love with the charm of this house. It's not "fancy", but, it is awesome! I would stay here again in a heart beat! Also, the booking agent was beyond wonderful and friendly and helpful. If you get a chance to stay here, go for it!"

"Gorgeous Home. We frequently stay at Four Seasons Hualalai so expect quite a bit from quality and design - this property did not disappoint! Gorgeous interior design! The lanai is perfect. Kitchen is well-appointed with Scan Pan and Kitchen Aid. The staff at 2 Papayas was amazing. If you are looking for a pool, this is not the place for you - but the staff at 2 Papayas can help you find one."

Wonderful base to explore the northwest coast of the Big Island
"The Puako area is very special, has some of the best resorts because it has some of the best beaches, and you can easily get to them all from this great apartment! There's a small beach across the street, but some of the best resort beaches are a 20 minute walk down a trail along the water. Others are a short drive to get some variety.
Peg and Bud are wonderful hosts, and they have provided plenty of written information and books in the apartment that give the inside information on the best things to see and do in the area. The upstairs apartment is light and sunny, with all that you need in the kitchen, a great screened in reading/sitting area, and spacious living room and bedroom. Outside there's a gas grill that we used every night to barbecue fish from the local markets. We loved the outdoor shower for getting off the salt and sand before going into the apartment. We used the blender to make great drinks from the fruits we got at the farmers' markets. You're in a neighborhood so there's a bit of noise in the morning when the neighbors head off to work, but in general this location is off the beaten path and very quiet.
There's a small general store 5 minutes away, and a large grocery story about 15 minutes away. We hit many of the farmer's markets, particularly up in Waimea which is only about a 20 min. drive. There's a great fish market and trailer serving fresh fish lunches about 10 min. away. There are beach bikes, chairs, boogie boards, towels etc. to use during your stay so all you have to do is show up!
We also loved their cat, whom we fed when Peg and Bud had to leave for a few days.
From here we went on for about a week to see the volcano erupt and checked out the beaches, etc. around Kona and south. But Puako was by far the most restful, fun place to be, and this apartment couldn't have been a better place to stay."
