"Our family of nine, two generations, had a wonderful experience for our first visit to Hawaii; this home was the icing on the cake! We spent time exploring/snorkeling/shopping during many of the ten days. But the quiet time just walking the five acres of orchards, eating meals outside with the glorious sunsets and swimming in the wonderful pool was probably the best part. We could have just stayed there at the beautiful home and not done the sightseeing things - it was a sweet private resort all its own! We enjoyed the delicious avocados and other fruit we could pick daily. The house is set up so that the two grandkids roomed with their parents in the upper Master and had their privacy for naps, etc. The other rooms were perfect for the older kids; the extra Master BR/Bath was nice for my wife and I. We hope to book Pu'u Mahana annually for our family and will be recommending it to all of our friends as well."

"This was our fifth trip to the Big Island. We had previously stayed in resorts, hotels, and private properties in populated areas so we were looking for something a little different. This home is located in a smaller hillside community. The house sits in a tropical setting among tropical flora. We found it to be clean and have everything we needed for a comfortable stay. I was however disappointed as to how far the house was from Captain Cook. It may have a Captain Cook address but it is located about 10 minutes south of Hookena Beach Park. The beach that is within the community within a 10 minute walking distance it is a very nice, black pebble, private beach. I personally don't think I could of walked back up the hill in under an hour. The road within the community is very steep and zig-zags back and forth. we opted to drive down where we found was parking for two vehicles. It would be beneficial to have a 4x4 vehicle to navigate this community. Views from the lanai are beautiful. There was no lounge her to enjoy the view but there was a patio table and chairs. There are homes on either side of you here. The one was vacant the other was occupied but very quiet. Overall it is a nice home with a beautiful view in what we found to be a quiet community."

  • A GORGEOUS OCEAN VIEW from the midst of a tropical garden 30 feet in the air

"If you enjoy the hustle and bustle of Alii Dr., keep looking. If, on the other hand, you would rather be 1500 feet on the side of Mauna Loa in the middle of a lush tropical garden with a 10 mile ocean view from Kealakua Bay to south of the Place of Refuge--then look no further! The house is an architectural marvel with 3+ floors. Each bedroom has its own individual balcony/deck, yet, except for sleeping, you will spend your time on the 3rd floor, 30 feet off the ground marveling at that expanse of ocean before your eyes; or watching the doves nesting at eye level near the top of the Palm tree five feet away; or looking down and around you at the mango, avocado, macadamia, plumeria, coffee on the gorgeous acre you have just rented. All from the incredible wrap around deck. The sense of spaciousness is unbelievable. YOU WILL NOT WANT TO LEAVE! Just outside of Captain Cook, 1 mile from a large local super market, and only 2 miles from Na'poo'poo Rd. and the beginning of the trail to Captain Cook Monument and the best snorkeling on the island. (The hike is 2 miles, but you will never see more reef fish, except maybe 15 minutes away at Two Step where we saw 50 species of fish—butterfly fish, triggerfish, surgeonfish, wrasse, puffers, parrotfish, eels, And TURTLES, AND swam with DOLPHINS!!! Comfortable furniture, newish appliances (dishwasher, washer&dryer WITH laundry soap), spices and condiments galore, and nearly everyday, Bruce puts an offering of the day's harvest (bananas, macadamia nuts, papaya, mangoes) at the bottom of the stairs. Snorkel equipment, boogie boards, even kayaks--all right there. Gorgeous house, amazing view! So would you rather listen to revelers, and cars in Kailua OR 15 miles away listen to birds in the daytime and frogs and crickets at night? The 8 in our family from ages 6 to 70 loved Pu'u'honua and can't wait to go back. WARNING! You won't want to leave!"

  • Amazing view and amazing experience

"Myself, my husband and my sister and her husband shared this spacious cottage for 3 nights. We loved the peacefulness, the beauty of the coffee trees and ocean view and the well furnished kitchen and outdoor dining. Dawn and Robert gave us a fascinating tour of their coffee farm complete with freshly brewed coffee and even tea made from the coffee tree leaves! It is a great place to take off for day trips to the volcano park and many different beaches. A wonderful trip I would highly recommend this place. The all wheel drive vehicle we rented handled the road well but I would recommend that someone also know how to drive it on a steep hill! And I also can recommend Mi's Italian Restaurant that is not too far away."
