  • Beautiful Place To Stay

"A beautiful home on a beautiful piece of property. We stayed in the Ohana guest house and it exceeded our expectations in most areas. It is very clean, private and quiet. The views from the Lanai are phenomenal. Nice hardwood floors so be sure to take your shoes off before entering,,, as the fun note on the side says. This is pretty common these days and not at all unreasonable. The market isn't real close by so be sure to plan a trip to the store. We stopped prior to arriving at the house on our fist day. We also made a Costco run the next day to stock up for the week. The house is not in the main tourist area which is why we booked it, we didn't want the noise & congestion of that part of the Island. Perfect, no but I'd go back in a minute. Beautiful home, I'd recommend it to anyone going to the Big Island. I do have to comment on a review someone else did complaining about the pool not being heated. Geeze, it's Hawaii and " nobody " heats their pools. After all it's a swimming pool not a Sauna. The " house information book " makes it clear that there is a charge for turning the hot tub on which to me is odd...but that's okay we probably wouldn't have used it anyway. There's also a charge if you want the air conditioning on. but by opening the windows ( they are screened ) and having the fans on it was never warm or uncomfortable. It was perfect. As stated they supply very nice towels and there is a washer & dryer so you need to do your own laundry, after all it's a house, not a hotel. I did find it all that we were only given one roll of paper towels and two extra rolls of toilet paper. Odd yes but not unreasonable I suppose, there's a WalMart & Target down the road. Another review or two mention that Dan wasn't necessarily the most polite person. So what if his interpersonal skills are less than you'd get at Macy's. After all it is his house and his business. He even apologized for his being curt during an email we got. He was off island during our stay so we dealt with the property manager Tammy who was very nice and professional. A good source for local information too."

  • Best Waterfront Deal in Kona!

"Just returned from a month-long vacation in this beautiful location. Large comfy beds, spacious & well-stocked kitchen, large lanai. Most days the cove was calm enough for swimming & snorkeling. We even did night snorkels. Some of the best Kona snorkeling is nearby at Honomolino, Hookena and 2-step. Mikie was prompt in responding to our inquiries & requests. BBQ needed parts and was repaired within a couple of days. We cooked nearly all our own meals with fresh island meats, fish & produce. Cell phone service was weak (adequate in one corner of the lanai), so having the house phone available for calls to the mainland was useful. Wifi/internet access was good. Lovely neighborhood. I hope to return!"

  • Perfect Place - no unpleasant surprises!

"My husband & I stayed in this wonderful place for 25 days. I was hesitant at first to be so far away from the tourist area, but this place is truly a gem! The closest grocery store is only 1.9 miles away (right at the turn off to get to their place). Walmart is 20 min away … but they don’t sell much produce or meat. Costco is 40 min away … best prices for most things. Kona Airport is 1 hr away. The place was a great size for us. We even had friends stay with us for 1 night. I wouldn’t recommend the sofa bed (for adults) if they were using it for more than 1 or 2 nights. They do have 2 apartments in the lower level that you may be able to rent if you need to. The bed was comfortable & the bathroom was a good size (room on the counter to leave some toiletries. The internet allowed us to Skype our grandkids back home. The cable TV worked well. The kitchen had everything we needed & the BBQ was perfect. It was warm during the day & cool at night. We spent a lot of time simply reading on the veranda! Their place is centrally located. Most things were a short drive. We went snorkeling a few times. Two- Step was our favorite place - app 15 min away. The volcano was app 2 hrs away. Green Sand Beach was app 1 ½ hrs away … we paid $15/per for a ride instead of walking the 4 mile hike. The other direction was Waipio Bay (most awesome view - bring a picnic lunch) & then we swung around & saw Akaka Falls. We drove up to the Summit one evening (only as far as the Visitor’s Center as we didn’t have a 4 whl drv). Manini Beach (15 min away) was my favorite … I could watch the waves splash up on those black rocks all day long! The only problem that I had was the single-lane paved road up to their place … because we were arriving at night. But I checked it out on Google Maps & spoke to Gretchen about it. We also brought our GPS. It ended up being very easy. The only advice that I have is the same that Gretchen gave me … you need to go right to the VERY end of the road - until you get to their house. After we did it once, it was a breeze & very enjoyable. Even though you were up in the mountain it wasn’t a cliff-hanging drive! Even though we can never be promised a clear night, their place has some of the best sunsets ever! Gretchen & Vic were always close by if we needed them. They were the best hosts - so easy to talk to & very helpful. Thank you so much the coffee, banana bread, avocadoes & mostly for your wonderful hospitality. We would definitely go back!"
