"We spent eight nights at Sandra and Ken’s Great Kona Escape, and it was great! The property is absolutely beautiful and the apartment itself is spacious and comfortably furnished. The location (on the side of a mountain) provides great views and is central to most things you will want to see while on the Big Island.
Sandra and Ken are very nice people. They shared fresh papaya from their garden with us and really seemed to care that we had a good time (unlike the owners of another property we stayed at on Oahu who seemed to be in it just for the money). Also Sandra is a great massage therapist. The cost of the stay was equivalent to about $150 per night. You can't get a decent hotel room in Hawaii for that! And this was a big three-room apartment.
The only glitch is that the apartment is not air-conditioned, and we had thought it would be (the only reason why this isn’t a five-star review). This turned out to be a problem caused by the HomeAway system. If the owner of a property types anything in regarding air conditioning, the words “Air Conditioning” show up under amenities with three little dots after them. Only if you run your mouse over the little dots do you see what they wrote. In Sandra’s case she had written that trade winds and ceiling fans keep the place comfortable. This is true and we ended up not minding the lack of air conditioning all that much. But someone with respiratory issues who really needed AC would have a real problem.
I took a quick look at other properties on the HomeAway site for the Big Island and discovered others that said “Air Conditioning...” but what was behind the ... were the words “No air conditioning.” HomeAway really needs to change this as not everyone will think to mouse over the three little dots. They and/or some of their owners could end up being accused of false advertising!"

Great property, but may not work everyone (see below)
"My girlfriend and I just spent a week at Sandra and Ken's property and it was wonderful. The pictures depict exactly what the property is like, and the rooms were clean, spacious, and comfortable. The outdoor kitchen was wonderful and the pool and hot-tub were perfect to the point where we spent pretty much every evening relaxing in them. Enjoying a nice glass of wine while relaxing under the stars was definitely some of the high-lights of our trip.
The one caveat that I would give is that you should understand what you are renting: the bottom half of someone's home. Now everything was completely separate and very private. If we approached them Sandra and Ken were happy to provide information about the island to us, but other than that they left us strictly alone. Some people might have an issue with people living and working right above you, but if you can step out of the traditional hotel model this is the place for you."
