  • Great condo in a great complex!

"Four of us – parents and two teen boys - went to the Big Island; we stayed in Kona for 7 days at the Kona Reef complex. What a great time we all had! The Kona Reef condos are a nice complex just a 2-block walk from the main part of Kona town. There are lots of restaurants, shops, sights-to-see, and a “farmers market” just a 10-15 minute walk from the complex. Kona Reef is next door to a small park and sandy beach (great for a half-hour’s fun) and about an 8-12 minute drive from Magic Sands (great body-surfing) or a 10-15 minute drive from Kahaluu (turtles!) beaches. The complex has a decent pool, free parking, and a great barbeque area in the pool/hottub area to cook dinner, make friends, and watch the sunset! It was never noisy or busy but there was always someone to talk to – or for the kids to hangout with – if we wanted. We rented this 1 bedroom condo...I’ll "guesstimate" it was about 700 sq.ft. + lanai; we were maybe 60 feet from the ocean and the view was GREAT - the kids fell asleep every night on the pullout sleeper sofa to the sound of the surf. We enjoyed occasional breakfasts and lunches on the lanai and we saw whales breeching 2 or 3 times from the condo! There’s all the major appliances (dishwasher, fridge, oven/stove, and washer/dryer), a three piece bathroom with tub, fans, and air-conditioner…the kitchen was stocked with almost all the small appliances we needed, including blender! Nothing was extravagant but everything was there, and for the price it was great! We rented through this VRBO page from KonaDave – he owns the condo and a nearby coffee farm and some other places. If we had a question about the condo, he was always available via phone/text. The day after we arrived, he came by with boogie boards and snorkel gear for the kids – we really appreciated him bringing these for us; they were great to have together with the cooler, beach chairs, and kickboards already in the closet! And what a cool character – KonaDave can tell you anything you want to know! Like to know a good non-touristy restaurant the locals go to? Want a tour boat to take you out snorkeling? Thinking about driving to the green sands beach? Ask KonaDave – he knows the right place to visit or the best company to call or just the right guy to ask! We'll be back! You should go!!"

  • Must experience it to believe it

"Heaven on a Hawaiian hill. You will need a car to drive down to town and explore all the island and busy activities, but this well appointed home is an excellent retreat from daily adventures. We did all we could each day until exhausted and found total comfort, peace and quiet each evening in Ray and Barb's lovely home, Hale Luana. They've created the most welcoming environment inside and outside on their very private, secure property. They delivered on every promise. We (two seniors) traveled with two adult kids and found the home's layout just right (2 bedrooms with 2 bathrooms separated.) Hale Luana was immaculate, simple to find and perfectly peaceful. If you want the kind of vacation you can control, this location is it. It does offer natural noise, light rustling breeze in the lush foilage, colorful chirpping birds and a couple of adorable night time chattering coqui frogs."

"Overall we had a wonderful stay in this house. Our vacation was a bit over shadowed by the hurricane's this past summer. The owner had a care taker on island who was very helpful in getting us prepared for the [what turned out to be a non-event] and sharing evacuation details with us. That being said this house might not be for everyone…I will break down the pros/cons. Pros.. --Location was perfect. Short easy drive to town, right on the ocean with a swimmable beach less than 5 minutes walk away. --It easily accommodated our party of 8. --We had beautiful ocean views and could watch the sea turtles right in front of our house. --Kitchen was adequately equipped. --Lots of outside furniture. --Owner was very responsive and easy to work with. --Price was incredible for what you got and the location. Cons… --Windows were showing wear and tear from all the sea salt [some couldn't really be opened/closed] --The worst part was only having AC in bedroom and not one in the common living area. The hurricane made it hotter and muggier than normal, but we had to close the windows every time we left so it got pretty hot. Although all the rooms had fans and it did cool of some at night it was uncomfortable, particular in the separate mother-in-laws bonus room. In all fairness we knew the place didn't have AC throughout, but I thought the trade winds would do a better job of cooling the place down. --There was a small mix-up regarding having the place ready for our check-in. The owner quickly remedied this and refunded us the first night because of this delay."
