"This lovely cottage-like home was perfect place for our family of five to spend a week. We felt at home as soon as we entered and, while the house had every conceivable convenience and thoughtful detail, it was still homey and comfortable. We ate all our meals and spent much lounging time outdoors in the large front lanai or spacious back yard. The kitchen was very well equipped, including a coffee grinder and mixer. We also were able to use the snorkel gear and boogie board that are available. Bird song and gentle surf are the music you hear as the occasional mongoose scampers through the yard. Each morning and evening we took our coffee or cocktails the 3 minute walk to watch spinner dolphins in the Bay. You can swim there or walk 5 min or so to gentle Manini Beach.
The drive to Captain Cook for groceries and other services is about 20-30 minutes and it is a short drive to the Pu'uhonua o Honaunau (Place of Refuge) and spectacular snorkeling at "Two Step" and to the beach at Ho'okena."

"We stayed for 9 days at this little piece of heaven cottage on the cliff side. It was about 20 miles south of Kona. There are several grocery stores nearby as well as gas stations, coffee cafes and restaurants. The hosts provide lawn chairs, snorkel equipment, boogie board and lunch cooler which is very convenient for road trips or beach days. Step 2 beach is a 15 minute drive away for great snorkeling. The cottage has a full kitchen with a great countertop for eating, ceiling fans for circulating the beautiful breezes and enough seclusion on the property for adequate privacy. The morning visits from the hosts' dogs were lovely, very calm pets. Enjoy the ocean views and the beautiful tropical foliage from the attached tiki deck. Everyone will love this little gem and we look forward to another visit."

"This will be our 3rd or 4th time renting Hale o Lei. Arrived from Oahu for a family reunion at Honauanu. Very convenient and comfortable house. All the comforts of home! Visited other vacation homes in the area and found Hale O Lei to be well equipped with ceiling fans during this hot summer weather. My cousins who rented in the area complained that their vacation house was not as cool as this house! Great open lanai area with privacy. Will definitely rent again! Owners very friendly!"

"We were lucky. We DID spend the whole month of Feb. 2015 in this lovely house:screen and natural materials instead of glass windows, and smooth wood floors that are wonderful on bare feet, high ceilings with fans to keep the air flowing, and authentic south pacific crafts and art and upholstery colors (greens) that give the house an organic tropical feel and create a soothing environment. We loved the small touches:having battery candles on the lanai so that we could see to eat every meal there.
We enjoyed having friends come to visit who could use the snorkel & and beach equipment that is provided (we bring our own for size and comfort). We used the portable beach chairs almost every day to have our sundownders (POG & rum) down at Manini beach.
We prefer living in a village to a resort. We rented in Opo'opo'o a couple of years ago when we also rented another house in south Kona. We have seen several others. This was our favorite and we hope to rent it again.
We appreciated the true hospitality and advice Karen provided and the insight on the house, the art, and local beaches provided by Mel in the many email conversations we had.
I achieved my heart's desire and swam with the dolphins at 2 step. We watched the surf reports every day to plan our snorkeling. Winter brings surf and makes getting into the water more difficult at some beaches. We took two boat trips we enjoyed: Hula Kai (a south kona snorkel on a new boat with good shade and smaller groups) and Fair Wind to Capt. Cook. On both trips we liked seeing whales and a 'pack' of hammerhead sharks, and being on the boat as much as the snorkeling.
We love the garden of palms and other tropical trees that surrounds the house and gives it such a wonderful cool shady green tropical feel.
Not to be missed: The botanical garden, painted church and honey farm nearby. Star gazing at the Mauna Kea visitor center. Farmers market at Capt. Cook. We did a repeat visit the botanical garden north of Hilo and the Pesto Café there. Also always enjoy the Keei Café (and the beach) and the Thai Orchid (across from Costco) and Annie's and Huggo's on the Rocks happy hour.
We give this house a 5* for its price range. It Is not fancy and doesn't have a view of water and there is some noise from the road, but as has been mentioned it IS a village and quite a few drivers use the road in front of the house to travel south to the transfer station and the City of Refuge...which is a very special place not to be missed."
