  • A good base for a busy vacation

"We stayed at Kona Calm in February to escape the cold of the Canadian Prairies. We were delighted with our experience and would whole-heartedly recommend it to others. Kona Calm is the perfect base for an active vacation on the Big Island of Hawaii. If your group enjoys exploring and outings, and needs a comfortable and spacious home to which to return, this should be your choice. Located in a quiet neighborhood it is just a very short drive away from the Kona beaches, restaurants, supermarkets and airport. Indeed, being just a few blocks away from the main highway makes getting on the road to more distant destinations just that little bit easier. With three teenagers we wanted a property with a little space; Kona Calm gave us the luxury of four separate bedrooms. However, 10 people could be accommodated comfortably in beds, 4 on the upper floor (master bedroom, and 2 twins) and 6 on the lower floor (2 queens in one room, 1 queen in the other). With a communal area on each of the floors, this might work well for two families staying together allowing each some extra privacy. The kitchen on the upper level is well-appointed, and the wireless internet worked seamlessly, even during intensive use by our teenagers. There is a small, very basic patio at the back of the house, with table and chairs available stored in the garage. Families with young children should note that there is a drop-off with no barrier at the edge of the patio which would pose a hazard. Due to the slope of the land towards the ocean, the patio (and the bedroom windows at the back of the house) give beautiful views of the ocean. We watched the sunset, a cruise ship anchored in the harbor, and a whale frolicking just off shore. We were woken by birdcalls in the morning and spotted numerous birds including a flock of feral parrots. Our daughter loved the geckos, both green and pale pink versions, who come out to hunt insects at night. The owners provide their own recommendation of places to go and we tried several of them, all excellent. We did lots of snorkeling, and every time spotted and even swam with sea turtles. As our first visit to the Island, and with only a week to spend, we feel we have only just started to discover this beautiful place and we hope to be back before long. Meanwhile, we agree that we have found both our new favorite hawaiian island and our new favorite place to stay."

  • Garden of Eden

"Lovely place to relax. Sandra is so generous with her fruit and what a joy it was to peacefully walk the grounds and enjoy the beauty. She planted almost all the grounds herself. I had a wonderful massage by Sandra as well. Loved the outdoor kitchen, waterfall, pool, and the high powered jets of the custom jacuzzi. Just amazing! Thank you Sandra! We will be back."

  • Paradise in the jungle

"We had a great time on the Big island! I found the location of this rentle perfect as it was half way to everything we wanted to see and explore. The drive was nice and the steep road down to the house is really not that bad with an SUV. If you don't like bugs this place may not be for you as it is surrounded by beautiful jungle and there are quite a few bugs. The wild life is wonderful to see however, lots of geckos, mongoose and birds around. Watching the sunsets from the lani is the perfect place to see the spectacular Hawaii sunsets. One thing I would recommend is leaving all the windows open as there is no air conditioning in this house and without the breeze off the ocean it can get unbarably hot. Leaving the windows all open with just the screens there helps a lot. The kitchen was perfectly stocked, having laundry was wonderful and the cd selection was great! On the rainy nights( seems to rain lots in the evening here) it was lovely to listen to the stario and play a game of cards. I would recommend this house to someone who enjoys being out of the city and enjoys the nature of Hawaii it was a beautiful getaway. Thank for Sam for having us!"

  • Great Stay

"Loved this condo. Very spacious and quiet. Had a wonderful fully equipped kitchen, lovely dining room and that great covered lanai right on the water. With the windows and fans did not need AC. Comfortable beds, lots of towels, great location and parking. Single story, easy access to everything."
